Heyne hits the big time

This weekend, a Susquehannock graduate will reach the big time in college sports.

Mason Heyne, a frequent topic in the college spotlight blog this spring for his exploits on the diamond at Rider University (29-26), will appear on ESPNU Friday, May 30 when the Broncs take on NCAA power Cal State Fullerton (37-19) beginning at 11 p.m.

Rider qualified for the NCAA 64-team field by winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference playoff tournament.

The freshman Heyne, a 2007 Susquehannock grad, was a two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week this season.

He leads the team with his .339 batting average heading to Friday’s game.

The third baseman has six home runs and 43 runs batted in, both of which rank second on the team, as is his .530 slugging percentage.

The double-elimination regional tournament field also includes UCLA (31-25) and Virginia (38-21).
