Pollick impressed with Milton

Susquehannock coach Dave Pollick will tell you he doesn’t look ahead. In fact, he wasn’t concerned about the opponent in Friday’s PIAA Class AAA championship game until the week went on. But, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t impressed with undefeated Milton.

“I have nothing but the utmost respect for them because going undefeated in a season is incredible,” Pollick said after his Warriors won their second straight state title by defeating the Black Panthers 3-1,

“Softball is such a fickle sport, so right off they bat (Milton) got my attention. Then add in the fact that they knocked off the two seeds ahead of me out of my district, I am really paying attention.

Yet, the coach hoped that despite being undefeated Milton had not seen a pitcher like Susquehannock’s Megan Sheaf all season.

They likely didn’t as Sheaf was dominant in the title game, allowing just one hit while striking out 11 against a team with two hitters averaging more than .500 and several more at .300 or better.

“I venture to say that if we had to play them again, like next week or something they would probably play a lot better,” Pollick said with his shiny gold medal draped around his neck. “But thankfully we don’t have to.”

Still, Pollick’s team - complete with three new starters from the 2007 championship squad - came through once again.

“It is astounding and very gratifying,” he said. “When you tell kids over and over and over, work hard and something good will come from it and you can turn around and it did, that feels so good.”
