York College had another solid school year on the field, but the Spartans really showed their prowess in the classroom during 2007-08 by placing 175 student-athletes on the Capital Athletic Conference all-academic list.
Student-athletes must earn a 3.20 grade-point average for the entire school year to be included.
For the third time in four years York led the CAC in number of berths on the all-academic squad and with 42.5 percent of its 412 athletes across 19 conference championship sports ranks the school second behind St. Mary's College, which posted an impressive 55.6 percentage of academic standouts.
One year ago, the Spartans saw 161 of their athletes earn the scholarly mention, up from 156 and 146 in 2006 and 2005 respectively.
"The high percentage visibly reinforces the concept that our student-athletes are firmly committed to their studies," York assistant dean for athletics and recreation Sean Sullivan said.
"As Division III non-scholarship athletes, their primary focus must always be on academics. We are all quite proud to witness a result that walks in step with our institutional goals and objectives."
The number of YAIAA alumni on the Spartans' list is way too long -- even for a Web blog -- but let's just say that the local high schools are very well represented.

Things were fine on the field too as York posted an all-time high of 325 wins, 73 all-conference selections and three All-Americans.
Sports shorts: It's time to bring back the "Sport shorts" section of this blog, although let's face it, I sometimes like to go off-the-field in this section.
Why?
Because I can, of course.
So, I have carefully chosen to return this segment by honoring the recent passing of comic genius George Carlin by reminding people to check out - via YouTube or other methods - his comparison of baseball and football.
Sports fans of any degree will likely appreciate the iconic Carlin's humor. Enjoy.
