All-Star game used to mean something

Tell me when people stopped caring about the Major League All-Star Game.
How did this happen?
All I know is that growing up in the 1970s and 80s, fans and players did care. It mattered who won, which was good for bragging rights all the way around.

Evidence? How about Pete Rose slamming into A's catcher Ray Fosse to score a run. Or Pirates right fielder Dave Parker gunning out runners at third base and home to win another one. Or that the American League seethed as one loss piled atop another.
Now, the winning side gets home field in the World Series, the American League is the one piling up victories -- and no one seems to care anymore about the outcomes.
It's kind of sad that the home run derby the night before is the only thing people talk about.
