Bison softball's local connections

Two YAIAA alumni recently completed their junior seasons of NCAA Division I softball at the prestigious Bucknell University.

Ashley Beans of Hanover and West York's Katie McDonald saw plenty of action for the Bison, who finished 23-29 on the season.

Bean started 48, mostly in center field and appeared in two other contests, hit .286 with 10 doubles, two triples and two home runs.

She led the team with 24 walks and stole five bases in six attempts. Her glove was superb too. She made just three errors in 80 chances.

McDonald might have had her ups and downs on the mound, but her contributions were key for the Bison.

The former Bulldog made 27 appearances, 20 starts this past spring, posting a 9-14 record with one save and a 4.55 earned run average.

She had one shutout and combined for two more and tossed 11 complete games. She was second on the team in innings pitched (130Ò).

Bucknell had a 13-7 Patriot League record, which tied Lafayette for second. Lehigh finished the regular season in first with a 14-6 mark and won the conference tournament.

Sport shorts: Scott Kazmir may be the best unknown pitcher in the Major Leagues.
The Tampa Bay lefty has a 7-3 record, along with a very impressive 2.62 ERA and has struck out 75 batters in 12 starts this season for the Rays, who shockingly have the best record in all of baseball.
Kazmir is a legitimate ace, which must really irk Met fans.
Back in 2004, New York traded the former first-round pick, along with Jose Diaz for Victor (not Carlos) Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunato.
Now that is one stinky deal.
