Penn State's Baker, Taylor gone for good?

Maybe this really is the end for Penn State defensive tackles Phil Taylor and Chris Baker.

According to a source close to the team, as well as FightOnState.com, Joe Paterno told his team during a squad meeting on Tuesday that he was permanently dismissing both players.

Both promising linemen had been involved in high-profile fights during the past two years.

It was unclear whether the apparent dismissals were the result of new off-field problems.

Baker was allegedly involved in two fights, pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor charges and received two years of probation. He was cleared of all wrongdoing by Penn State's Office of Judicial Affairs early this year.

Taylor was allegedly involved in the on-campus student union brawl last October and pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges. He was expelled from the university for both summer semesters but was expected to rejoin the Lions sometime after the middle of August.

Paterno had stressed that Baker, Taylor and other players in his doghouse would only be reinstated to the team if they maintained a particular academic standard.

if these two players could not live up to the standards set by the team they should be dismissed from the team. the team must maintain the high standards they are know for.
