Spartans ranked academically again

Well another college year has come and gone, yet once again it is time to salute York College women's basketball coach Betsy Witman for the outstanding job she does on and off the court.

Witman's team closed the 2007-08 hoops campaign with a school record 19 wins, but the Spartans' accomplishments far from stop there.

For the fourth time in five years the York College women finished in the top 10 nationally academically -- an amazing and under-appreciated achievement.

"I am once again, very proud of what my team has accomplished this year," Witman said on the college's Web site. "My team continues to embody the perfect balance of student and athlete."

Led by Gina Casadei, who graduated in May after achieving a 4.0 grade-point-average, the Spartans produced a cumulative 3.467 GPA for the academic year.

In fact, 12 of the 14 players on York's roster earned a GPA of 3.2 or higher.

The Spartans finished just .021 behind fifth-place Beloit College and .17 away from Concordia of Wis., which achieved the top spot in Division III.

The York women do not rely on easy course loads either.

For example, Casadei was an engineering major and six of the other players are studying nursing, which is known for being one of the toughest majors at the school.

Amy Fry held a 3.95 average, while freshman April Sparkman boasted a 3.89.

"This award is certainly a credit to coach Witman and her players," York assistant dean of athletics and recreation Sean Sullivan said. "The program continues to rank among the nation's elite while also doing an outstanding job on the floor."

Great work for sure.

Sport shorts; Wow, a 15-inning Major League All-Star Game that ended past 1:30 Wednesday morning must have been something to see, although I am sure because of the length of the contest few did.

Personally, I missed it. I was at the beach. So, no baseball for me.

Hey, even us sports reporters take time away from sports.
