Jess Smith great for DeSales tennis

| | Comments (0)

Delone Catholic graduate Jess Smith had a terrific week for the DeSales University women's tennis team last week.

The sophomore went a perfect 2-0 in both doubles and singles and for her efforts was named the Freedom Conference Player of the Week.

Smith followed that by earning the Bulldogs' only singles win in DeSales' 7-2 loss at rival Moravian on Wednesday.

She is a perfect 5-0 in singles this year -- the only non-blemished record on the Bulldogs (4-1) and sustained her first loss of any kind in doubles against Moravian. Smith and partner Kate Steiner are now 4-1 in doubles' play.

In 2007, the physicians assistant major and dean's list student went 18-2 overall in singles, including 5-0 in the conference and was a second-team all-conference selection following her freshman season.

At Delone, Smith also played basketball and softball and made it to the second round of the District III Class AA singles tennis tourney.

Of course, there is always some confusion when the name Jess Smith and Delone Catholic are mentioned as another standout athlete of the same name was a Squirettes' volleyball star.

That Jess Smith is a junior on the York College volleyball team. The libero returned to the Spartan floor this season following a major knee injury.
