Zerfing joins Spartans' staff

Normally in the college spotlight we tend to focus on players, but the news from York College for today's blog is cause for a brief change as the school announced that John Zerfing will join the Spartans' staff as an assistant coach this upcoming season.
Zerfing has been a long-time coach in the area, including nearly 20 years at various levels in the Central York School District, where he concluded a four-year stint as varsity head coach in 2005.
Central won 57 games with Zerfing at the helm and he was named the YAIAA Coach of the Year in 2001-02 and 2002-03.
After leaving Central, he found himself serving as a varsity assistant at Susquehannock for one season.
He also helped found the Courage AAU program in 2001.
Also, Zerfing already has ties to York College as his son, Brad Zerfing (class of 2007), was a four-year letterwinner for the Spartans and one of the smartest college players I have seen.
The older Zerfing also served as color analyst to play-by-play man Darrell Henry during Spartan radio broadcasts during the last three years as well.
"I'm very excited for this opportunity to coach at York College," Zerfing said in a statement from the school. "I've been fortunate to have experienced the tremendous success the basketball program has had over the last five seasons from a parent's perspective and as a radio broadcast partner for many of their games."
This sounds like a great move. John is an experienced basketball man that knows the rigors of Division III college basketball between watching Brad play at York and his own collegiate career at Dickinson College.
He should give Spartan head coach Jeff Gamber and assistant Dean Gamber a solid technician and vocal presence on the bench during games.
"I have gotten to know many of the players, as well as Jeff and Dean, over this time period and look forward to being part of the team and working with them," Zerfing continued. "I have tremendous respect for Jeff and Dean, and for what they've accomplished with the program. I feel very fortunate they've given me this opportunity to be a part of York's basketball program."
