"I don't know what he was doing, but he got me to fire him."
-- Al Davis
I think that just might be my favorite quote of this whole messy breakup between Raiders owner Al Davis and former coach Lane Kiffin. And the fact that Davis told him over the phone. No face-to-face for this fearless leader of Raider Nation. No sir. But I guess the phone is better than a fax or text, right?
Here's the other great lines:
Kiffin (the first thing he said after he was fired): "Do I get paid?"
Davis: "No."
Classic. I have to agree with Mr. Davis. Contract not withstanding, Kiffin's Raiders went 1-3 and dropped fourth-quarter leads to San Diego and Buffalo. No pay for you!
Really though, this is just a drop in the Raiders' pool of misfortune. I'm sure interim coach Tom Cable will follow in the footsteps of Art Shell, Norv Turner and Bill Callahan before him and lead the Black and Silver forward into their destiny of mediocrity.
Here's some depressing numbers for you fans out there -- and there are Raiders fans in York County, mind you. I know three: me, my brother, Tom, and my brother's friend, Gary.
Since going to the Super Bowl in 2003, the Raiders numbers look like such:
6 seasons
4 coaches
.238 winning percentage
7 road wins
Wow. That's super bad. It makes this one fan of Raider Nation long for the days of Jonny and Richie.
Ahh Rich Gannon. Those were the days . . .
