A great weekend of hoops

January ended with a hoop-tastic weekend for me as I got to cover a pair of premier games, both in jam-packed, noisy gyms.

My first stop was Friday night in the brand new digs at Eastern York as the host Golden Knights squared off against YAIAA Division III leader York Suburban.

Eastern (12-1 league, 18-1 overall) avenged its early-season overtime loss -- the only blemish in an outstanding campaign -- to the Trojans (13-1, 18-2) with an impressive 66-54 victory.

The teams were so evenly match this season, which prompted Knights coach Larry Fisher to tell me that if they played 10 times a season, each team would likely win five.

The Knights and Trojans respect each other immensely and could face each other three more times this season in the YAIAA, the Class AAA district and state tournaments. Although someone will likely have to beat William Penn in the York-Adams tourney to make that happen.

"It is so important in high school basketball that you give everything you have on the floor and understand the other guy is as well," Fisher said. "Both in the loss and the win, my guys were the same people and so were Suburban kids."

Plus, it is not just this season that Suburban and Eastern so closely matched. Entering Friday's game the two schools faced each other 108 times. Each had won 54.

The second game was the epic battle Saturday night when Red Lion hosted West York, where once again fans packed the stands in the second-to-last regular season game that will be played at the Lions old gym, which will give way to a new one for 2009-10.

Red Lion scored the first 11 points of the contest and led throughout until the Bulldogs overcame a 13-point third-quarter deficit to take the lead with less than four minutes to play in the game.

Still, Todd Maciejewski drove the length of the floor and banked home a layup as time expired, giving Red Lion a 56-54 victory.

The Lions drilled 10 3-pointers with Spencer McCreary hitting six shots and Josh Lauver three from beyond the arc.

But, the Bulldogs hung in there by going 17-of-22 from the free throw line.

"I sure knew that West York wasn't going to go away," Red Lion coach Steve Schmehl said. "We got out early and they clawed back. I knew my guys would make enough plays. I was hoping it was (going to be) enough to win the game."
