Late-Jan. Power Rankings

Is the postseason here yet?

I think everybody is ready for it. Whatever you're undefeated like William Penn boys and Northeastern girls, surging like Red Lion boys and West York boys, or just looking for a fresh start after recent troubles like Central York boys, it seems like area basketball teams are antsy to get to the games that matter most.

That's still about two weeks away. As a consolation prize, the latest rankings are after the jump. Voice your opinion on my selections in the comments section.

Boys

1. William Penn (18-0): More of the same from the Bearcats - consistent success, game in and game out.

2. Eastern York (16-1): Speaking of consistent success, the Golden Knights have done pretty well themselves this season so far, even though they will need help just to claim the Division 3 title outright.

3. Red Lion (13-4): Still undefeated with Josh Lauver on the floor and have a chance to get revenge for an earlier loss against Central York on Friday.

4. York Suburban (16-1): One bad game all year. Otherwise, the Trojans have been downright superb and join the ranks of a formidable top four.

5. West York (13-4): They also have a fifth loss against a team from Maryland, but that's just part of their early season struggles against a tough schedule. In the league, the Bulldogs have won 10 of 11, including a narrow victory at New Oxford on Wednesday. Watch out for West York.

6. New Oxford (13-5): The Colonials couldn't top the Bulldogs, but they have still put themselves in fine position to qualify for the YAIAA tournament.

7. Kennard-Dale (9-9): They may only be at .500 overall, but they have come out of nowhere to win seven consecutive games and picked up a 14-point victory over Delone Catholic on Tuesday.

8. Delone Catholic (11-4): The Squires did not look good on Tuesday night, and it's starting to get too late in the season to not look good.

9. Central York (11-7): The Panthers are fading fast, but can make a major statement if they can beat Red Lion on Friday for the second time this season.

10. Dallastown (7-9): Barely holding onto a spot in the top 10, the Wildcats still have plenty of work left to do just to qualify for the postseason, needing to go 3-1 over the last four games in a stretch that includes William Penn and Central York.

Girls

1. Northeastern (18-0): Here's an interesting question: Which undefeated team's overall performance has been more impressive this season, William Penn boys or Northeastern girls?

2. Eastern York (16-2): A loss against Altoona isn't enough to drop the Golden Knights down on the list.

3. Delone Catholic (14-2): The Squires (because, really, it's a gender neutral nickname just like all the rest, so there's no need to call them the Squirettes) continue to win after that setback against York Catholic.

4. Red Lion (13-4): The winning streak had ended, but the young Lions are still roaring load enough to get the rest of the league to take notice.

5. York Catholic (13-3): Don't look now, but if the regular season ended today, the Fighting Irish would face Red Lion in the quarterfinals of the YAIAA tournament.

6. West York (13-4): That's right, four of the league's top six teams come from the lower tier of Division 3 and Division 4. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, that means more tough games, including Tuesday's tilt at Eastern

7. Spring Grove (12-6): Like Kennard-Dale and York Suburban, Spring Grove has bounced back from a sub-.500 season in 2007-08 to qualify for the postseason. The Rockets might actually get there with 15 wins.

8. York Suburban (10-6): The Trojans posted big wins over Biglerville and Littlestown and are looking more dangerous for opponents as the season wears on.

9. New Oxford (10-6): The Colonials face Red Lion on Tuesday, which should give them a good idea of where they stand heading into the postseason.

10. Kennard-Dale (10-6): Getting blown out by New Oxford last week is not a good sign for the Colonials as they move forward, but they can feel comfortable about making it into the District 3 Class AAA tournament.

If the regular season ended today York catholic would play Northeastern in the girls side.
