Autumn Lau is more than just familiar with the player she passed for the top spot on the YAIAA career scoring list Tuesday night. Lau played against Farifield's Lauren Beckley in the 2005-06 season when Lau was a freshman and Beckley was a senior.
"I just remember her being unstoppable," Lau said. "She was unguardable. We tried to guard her, but she had a heck of a game on us."
Lau is just as difficult to stop and with teammates that include twin sister and fellow future Division I player Amber Lau and talented guard Jess King, Northeastern has a chance to contend for the state title, which means more games and more chances to score for Autumn.
"It was a great experience for the girls," Northeastern coach Mike Drenchko said. "It's Autumn's and it's a great honor to have for however long it lasts and the girls feel real good about it. Everybody feels like these four years they have shared with her. It's a very positive thing for the whole team."
With those teammates helping to keep Northeastern's season alive, just how many will Autumn get before the end of her high school career? Will she be able to pass 2008 York Catholic graduate Jacob Iati and his 2,388 career points?
That all depends largely on how many games Northeastern will play.
It could be as many as eight if the Bobcats reach the PIAA Class AAA title game or as few as four if Northeastern falls in the first round of the state tournament (since six Class AAA teams qualify for the state tournament from District 3, the Bobcats will likely play three more district games, including consolations if they lose, and at least one PIAA game).
With Autumn averaging more than 20 points a game, she has a good chance of passing Iati and cracking the 2,400 mark if the Bobcats play six games, which means making the state quarterfinals.
Back in December I guessed Lau would finish with 2,412 points, so I'm going to stick with that number. If anybody else wants to put a prediction out there in the comments section, this is your chance.
