Mennonite's La Venice dominating

| | Comments (0)

In what could prove to be a bad sign of things to come, Lancaster Mennonite senior forward Erin La Venice has become a force in the second quarter of the District 3 Class AA girls' basketball championship. Lancaster Mennonite leads 20-15 at the half.

A 6-foot junior forward, La Venice has scored a team-high eight points, but she took over in the second frame -- scoring six points underneath the hoop. This has to be a concern for York Catholic, because not only has La Venice taken the game over but she is disrupting York Catholic at the other end of the court. Catholic's Kady Schrann (game-high 10 points) has two layups, including a nifty left-handed reverse, but every other Irish player seems intimidated by La Venice and Mennonite's other big girl -- 5-10 Katelyn Vanderhoff.

One player to watch is York Catholic's Brittany Hicks. She has scored five points, and needs to become a presence down low if the Irish hope to rebound. Hicks has three boards so far, well off her game-high 11 she pulled down in the semifinals.
