Post-Districts Power Rankings

| | Comments (7)

York Catholic girls made it four in a row and York Suburban boys did it for the first time.

For their efforts, they both move up in this week's rankings. Also, four boys teams and six girls teams will be continuing their respective seasons in the PIAA tournament, so these are far from the final rankings.

The full list is after the jump. I've left out the bottom three for each gender, since all of their seasons have been over for more than a week. Check out last week's rankings for more detail.

Boys

1. William Penn (28-1): No more perfection for the Bearcats, but one loss isn't enough to drop them from this top spot.

2. York Suburban (24-3): The Trojans have proven themselves to be big-time players en route to the program's first-ever district title, led by consummate clutch performer Mitch Kemp.

3. Eastern York (25-4): Two losses in a row doesn't look good for the Golden Knights going into the state tournament, but they definitely have the talent to make some noise.

4. Red Lion (8-14): The Lions probably still think about what could have been.

5. Delone Catholic (18-8): The Squires did well enough to get back to states this season, which should be applauded. Now they have the unenviable task of facing the first-place team from District 12.

6. West York (16-6): It's still shocking that the Bulldogs have missed the state tournament for two consecutive years after winning the district championship.

7. New Oxford (17-9): So close, but it's always a tough draw when you have to face the eventual district champion in the quarterfinals.

Girls

1. Eastern York (23-6): The Golden Knights gave Muhlenburg a real pounding in the District 3 Class AAA third-place game, showing that they are ready for PIAA competition.

2. West York (23-5): Losing in the quarterfinals couldn't stop the Bulldogs from handling Northeastern and guaranteeing themselves a state berth.

3. York Catholic (22-6): They haven't been dominating the competition like they did while going 103-2 over the previous three seasons, but this year's Fighting Irish squad has every right as those others to call themselves district champions.

4. Red Lion (19-7): A youthful and inexperienced team finally led the Lions to a state berth. With nothing left to lose, they could end up pulling off an upset or two.

5. Delone Catholic (24-4): They couldn't stop the Fighting Irish in district play, but they could have another shot at them in PIAA competition.

6. Northeastern (23-3): The Bobcats found out just how good Trinity and West York are.

7. Spring Grove (19-10): The Rockets play on as the biggest surprise story among league teams this season.

Sorry, but I beg to differ. Yes, William Penn had a GREAT run. BUT- York Suburban PULLED through! I have watched your rankings, for many weeks- it was irritating to see- most especially the "sympathy" for Red Lion and "what could have been" being placed above them (why penalize YS?). You still do not credit the fact as it stands, YS WON!! They now deserve more coverage and support towards the State title, the same as the York Catholic girls- and remember- Mitch Kemp is staying in York and will be at York College next year. Good Luck to all!

The run is over for York High. Let's see what they do now. They got a gift from Reading. York was totally dominated but stupid Reading wanted to rub it in and it backfired. As seen, when York goes up against teams with big boys, they stink. The county has nobody so they looked good throughtout the year. Now we'll see how they can come back after getting muscled around again in districts. As was seen in the county playoffs, even though they won, when they played the better teams York struggled. One word comes to mind, "Overrated". Let's wait and see in States how good they really are. Trust me, when they lose, some excuses will come up for losing. Count on it!

You are clueless! In one season York has beaten Harrisburg, South Philadelphia, Reading, Steel High, Lancaster Mckaskey, Pocono Mountain East, Redlion twice, YORK SUBURBAN, Eastern and Williamsport. Name one team in the York league that could go through that schedule with one loss. If you can honestly do that and give some objective information to support your choice I will concede that York Suburban is the best team in these rankings. They are 28-1. they have managed to come out with wins through adversity and that is the mark of a good team.

You are a hater. I love to see all county teams being successful at the district and state level. York Suburban won the district title at the AAA level York was in the title game at the AAAA level there is quite a difference between those two levels. Don't let the accomplshementof Suburban cloud your vision from reality. York deserves the rating givin in this system and Suburban is worthy of the number 2 rating.

My question to you is how many times did York stink this season when they only have one loss?

You are just another one of those people that probably live in the burbs and secretly take issue with any progress, success, or recognition that inner city kids get. Crawl back into your hole and stop hiding behind your screen the world is changing and your are being weeded out.

Good luck to every YAIAA team competing in states!

Willie Penn, fostering an environment that places athletics (and everything else) higher than its academics.

Wow! Such harsh words and criticism from all. I love it. Like they say, opinions are like a__holes, every one has one. And some a__holes have many. #1, #2. Whatever. Both teams have done very well this season. I applaud both for their resilience in the post season, albeit one short for the Bearcats. I agree that York High did not face quite enough stiff competition in the area to prepare them for all of the tough teams they have faced and will face in States. I also agree that they are a very good basketball team and have beaten some very good teams throughout the state. Differences aside, I think every team from this area needs our support in their run for a state title. As for the last comment about York High's focus on all things non academic...come on, really. I am a York High grad and I feel like I was pretty well prepared for the successful career that I have enjoyed. I know that many other successful York High Alumni would agree.

Gee whiz- I did not intend to open such a can of worms.
I do believe I read "reply" to the writer of the rankings with any comments.
That was my only intention, and just questioned the rankings as they stand. I understand why William Penn is above York Suburban- I did not understand why they were under ranked in previous week(s), and why that note of sarcasm "no sweat, right?" was made. I also wondered why York Catholics girls were ranked were they are.
"TO RAMRODD"- your comment turned on both comments- in such an attack!
I sure hope you re-read the first one again and realize how CLUELESS, YOU really are.
Do not make "my comment" a racial, city vrs. burbs or any more than what I intended. I have relatives in many school districts throughout York County, and the last thing I said was-GOOD LUCK TO ALL!-
