College programs swarming Schrann

Which Division I college basketball programs have shown interest in York Catholic sophomore guard Kady Schrann? Fighting Irish coach Kevin Bankos said that's the wrong question to ask.

"It's probably easier to tell you the ones that haven't been showing interest," Bankos said with a laugh. "Some of the big name ones have definitely contacted me."

Schrann was named first-team all-state for the second consecutive season on Wednesday and helped the Irish win a fourth consecutive District 3 title and reach the PIAA championship tilt for the fourth straight season. The sophomore led the team in scoring with 17.5 points per game.

She has impressed enough people to garner serious attention from programs like Duke, Maryland, Penn State and Notre Dame among others.

"Every coach that I've talked to -- and it's kind of interesting to talk to them -- has asked me if she can play there and if so in what position," Bankos said. "Every one of them has agreed with our assessment that she can definitely play at that level. Even as a sophomore now she can play at that level."

Schrann ran the point for the Irish this season and showed she can run an offense just as well as she can penetrate opposing defenses. She has a knack for getting to the basket and either hitting shots on the run, drawing fouls, or both. Schrann was the Irish's top free throw shooter this season, making 88 of her 105 attempts. In college, Bankos said she could play either point guard or shooting guard.

"I think if this was her senior year and would definitely put her out front and let her run an offense because she is going to be surrounded by tremendous athletes," Bankos said. "She could definitely assume the role of running the offense and not worry about much else -- I think she would just be a phenomenal point guard.

"That being said, I think two years from now she might be one of the best two guards in the area and they could let someone else handle it and just let Kady be a scorer. It's really going to be based on team need. If somebody like Duke needs a two than she can play that and if somebody like Maryland needs a one, she could play that. I think she would be perfect at either role."

Bankos said Schrann needs to continue to work on her jump shot. She has already showed progress in that area from her freshman season, but will need to become more comfortable catching and shooting the ball. Right now Schrann prefers to shoot off her own dribble, which she does well, but limits the number of truly open looks she will get from the outside.

Otherwise, there's really not much missing from Schrann's game despite being so young. She has already proven herself to be a top-notch defensive player and cracked triple digits in steals this season with a total of 103. Her only other possible weakness may fix itself with age.

"We all feel that she needs to get stronger and she feels she needs to get stronger, obviously," Bankos said. "She will, just from two more years of maturity."
