Early-May Power Rankings

Rain postponed the District 3 team tennis tournament, but couldn't halt Central York's reign at the top of these rankings. Or something.

Not too much has changed from last week's rankings, as most of the top teams are getting into a groove leading up to the postseason.

There are a couple new developments, however. For the fourth consecutive week there is a different baseball team in the rankings. A Susuquehannock softball team that has rediscovered its winning ways moves up a spot (watch highlights from the Warriors' recent victory over New Oxford above). But that's about it.

Full rankings and rationale after the jump. Chime in with your take in the comments section.

1. Central York boys' tennis (11-0): Still undefeated and still surging. The Panthers had three of the four semifinalists in the YAIAA singles tournament and had two teams in the league doubles championship match.

2. Central York softball (16-1): The Panthers picked up a narrow victory on the road at South Western and have to be considered one of the favorites to win the District 3 Class AAAA title this year and go far in the state tournament.

3. Red Lion boys' lacrosse (14-0): Despite this being the program's debut season, the Lions look like they have been doing this for years. I mean, they have been doing it for years at the club level, but their success is still impressive. Now they just have to contend with some of the Lancaster County powers in the district tournament.

4. Central York boys' volleyball (9-2): The defending league champions remain the favorite to repeat their regular season and tournament titles. They'll likely have to go through Northeastern for both of those, and the teams will play for first-place on Thursday.

5. Northeastern boys' volleyball (10-2): The moment of truth is coming for this young and talented team. They have to play Central York on the road on Thursday and the league and district tournaments start soon after. When the Bobcats are at their best, they are a tough team for anyone to beat.

6. Susquehannock softball (13-2): Megan Sheaf is looking sharp and the Warriors weathered a rough stretch midway through the season and have now won five consecutive games. They will still likely have to beat Central York to earn the YAIAA tournament crown.

7. Central York girls' soccer (13-4-1): The Panthers beat Carlisle for the first time this week, providing some evidence that Central has a chance to have success outside of the league when the playoffs begin. This week, they'll be the top seed in the eight-team YAIAA tournament.

8. Susquehannock boys' lacrosse (11-1): The Warriors continue to find success against everyone they play not named Red Lion and, like the Lions, are a legitimate threat to contend for the District 3 title and possible earn a spot in the state tournament.

9. Northeastern baseball (14-3): The Bobcats are on a roll, winning seven straight games and taking hold of first place in Division II. They will have a chance to make an even stronger statement on Tuesday when they play a Central York team that is in first place in Division I.

10. Kennard-Dale girls' lacrosse (12-3): The Rams picked up another non-league loss recently, this one at home to Warwick. Of course, the three teams that have beaten Kennard-Dale are all in the top six of LaxPower's computer rankings for Central Pennsylvania, so at least the Rams are losing to the best.
