Phils' Burrell OK for Game 1

With 33 minutes left until gametime, here's the news out of Philadelphia:

The Associated Press reported that Phillies outfielder Pat Burrell was in the lineup Wednesday for Game 1 of the division series a day after he left a workout because of discomfort in his lower back.

Burrell looked fine taking swings during batting practice and was batting fifth for the Phillies in the best-of-five division series against Milwaukee. The left fielder hit .250 with 33 home runs and 86 RBIs.

Check back for periodic game updates.

Raiders' extended hangover

"I don't know what he was doing, but he got me to fire him."
-- Al Davis

I think that just might be my favorite quote of this whole messy breakup between Raiders owner Al Davis and former coach Lane Kiffin. And the fact that Davis told him over the phone. No face-to-face for this fearless leader of Raider Nation. No sir. But I guess the phone is better than a fax or text, right?

Here's the other great lines:

Kiffin (the first thing he said after he was fired): "Do I get paid?"
Davis: "No."

Classic. I have to agree with Mr. Davis. Contract not withstanding, Kiffin's Raiders went 1-3 and dropped fourth-quarter leads to San Diego and Buffalo. No pay for you!

Fear the Beaver

beaver.jpeg ABOVE: This beaver is kind and gentle and builds dams. BELOW: This Beaver romped for 186 yards against the so-called best team in the nation.Jazzredo.jpg

Oregon State romped over No. 1 USC - I'm sorry, make that soon-to-be-former No. 1 USC - 27-21 on Thursday night. They were ahead 21-0 in the FIRST HALF.

Isn't this the same team that Penn State thrashed 45-14 two weeks ago? This should bode well for the Nittany Lions in the poll . . . .

When injuries cost the schools

professional_negligence.jpg

Anyone who has taken a basic law course - sport focused or not - knows about negligence and the reasonable-person standard. If you are involved in high school sports in any form, and you don't know about negligence, I suggest you study up.

I found these two examples of how the actions - or inactions - of a few coaches ended up costing two schools - and the taxpayers - mucho dinero.

More on the latest Bigfoot 'news'

OK, so some guys in Georgia found a Bigfoot in the forest. And he was dead. So they took him home and stuck his poor, dead bones in a freezer. And that's where it is right now.

Sure.

The whole story, along with some murky photos, appears on page 6B of Saturday's York Sunday News. Here's the Associated Press version of the story.

Here are some additional layers to the story, as promised in today's Daily Record sports section.

1. The YouTube version of the Patterson-Gimlin film from 1976:

2. For past Bigfoot articles on The Lineup Card, including coverage of the Jacobs photos taken in Pennsylvania last year, click here.

Finally, click here to check out the latest news on Bigfoot, via Google. Many newspapers covered Friday's news conference in California, so you can read all the different perspective on those fellas from Georgia and the hairy beast they supposedly have on ice.

Big Air = Big Hurt

Danny Way took a big spill this year, but walked away with the silver medal in Big Air.

Boy do X Games participants have major chutzpah to do what they do. This is the second straight year of a big spill in the Big Air skate competition.

Watch out for that bear!

The most exciting news of the day from the U.S. Senior Open Championships (for me anyway) is the appearance of a large black bear that pranced across the fairway:

Notice how no one seems particularly inclined to get the heck out of there.

Worst gratuitous monkey photo ever

deadmonkey.jpg

A preserved monkey is shown on display in the lobby of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab last week in Decatur, Ga. The shaved monkey was part of a 1953 UFO hoax in rural Cobb County.

For more, check out this story.

(We'll get back to cute monkeys next time.)

Why, Wie? Why?

Wie.jpg
Michelle Wie, please prove yourself on the LPGA Tour first.

So the Women's British Open starts Thursday. It's the last major for Annika Sorenstam, who will retire at the end of the season as one of the top two female golfers ever.

But leave it to Michelle Wie to snag the spotlight, for once again doing what she does best - absolutely nothing.

Malice at the Palace, Part Deux

Tuesday's L.A. Sparks-Detroit Shock game provided quite the entertainment when a melee broke out at the Palace of Auburn Hills - home to the infamous Pacers-Pistons free-for-all that took place in 2004.

Searching for snakes can be a bear

snake4.jpg
Kelvin Pereira (KP), Sonia McFadden, Christopher Pereira (holding bag containing a black rat snake) and David Mcfadden (holding bag containing a timber rattlesnake)

A few local adventuresome types who attended the 2008 Landisburg Fire Company's annual timber rattlesnake hunt fundraiser got to experience some other wildlife up-close-and-personal.

Area residents Kelvin Pereira (KP), Sonia McFadden, Christopher Pereira and David McFadden drove a short distance from where the rest of their group was hunting on July 19. David left the others to hunt a rugged, rocky open pipeline while the rest of the group waited near the vehicle.

Here's an excerpt from the e-mail sent to us by David:

As Sonia, Christopher and KP lounged inside the truck trying to keep cool, a black bear of gargantuan proportions approached completely unnoticed by all. Only when Sonia caught a glimpse of movement outside her window did she see the bear, which at that point was almost inside the vehicle with them. Sonia and the bear saw each other at the same time and the bear turned to meander up the pipeline.

The bear . . .

Baseball managers gone wild

It seems that the promotion people at minor-league baseball stadiums aren't the only ones trying to keep the fans entertained at games anymore. When some of these managers meltdown, boy, do they give it all they've got.

The most recent, Kash Beauchamp of the Witchita Wingnuts (which is just a great name) was left standing on the field in his red socks.

So in honor of these managers who go the extra mile in their rants, here's a look back at some doozies:

Photograph Bigfoot, win a million dollars

The latest twist in the Sasquatch Saga ...

(for past updates on this story see this and this.)

... is that Field & Stream has come up with the brilliant (marketing-wise) plan of offering $1 million to the first person who takes a verifiable photo of a sasquatch using a trail camera.

Some blog threads never die

albino1.jpg

A couple of truly old blog posts here on The Lineup Card are still generating commenting traffic. It's kind of fascinating, really. They just created lives of their own and kept on ticking.

In case you're curious, one is the infamous entry from Nov. 20, 2007, about the harvesting of an albino bear cub. That one has 78 comments and counting. And the other is the "Irked about the York Young Revolution" reader letter from Nov. 19, 2007, which has 60 comments thus far.
