During a media event to commemorate the opening of a new Tiger Woods-designed golf course in Asheville, N.C., in early October, one 12-year-old stole the show.

Woods hit two ceremonial drives at The Cliffs at High Carolina, both of which sailed into the trees. He then offered the crowd of more than a hundred spectators the opportunity to tee it up and try to outdrive him. Nobody took the challenge -- until young golfer Mark Benevento Jr. stepped up.

With all eyes on him, the 12-year-old calmly whacked a 200-yard drive straight down the fairway. Tiger said he'd like to see that shot again, and Mark obliged, sending another shot straight and true.

The sure-fire future Hall of Famer will soon become the Yankees all-time franchise hits leader, an impressive stat to say the least.

However, despite the Yanks running away with baseball's best record, Jeter is not the American League MVP for 2009 as some would suggest.

Barring a total collapse, anyone who doesn't vote for the Twins' Joe Mauer should have their voting privileges taken away.

Mauer is hitting a robust .367 entering play on Thursday and has 82 RBIs on a team not nearly as good as the one Jeter gets to play for.

Also (sorry New York fans) Mauer fields his position much better than Jeter and to post such incredible offensive numbers as a catcher is downright scary.

Without Jeter, the Yankees still win the East. Without Mauer, Minnesota is well below .500 and is playing September call-ups by now.

On Thursday a foursome of York YMCA swimmers made quite a splash in the pool at the Jr. Nationals in Federal Way, Wash.

The team of Sada Stewart, Hali Flickinger, Sarah Dotzel and Julia Kucherich entered the day seeded last out of 38 teams in the women's 800 free relay.

However, after Stewart led off the race with an Olympic Trail cut time (2:03.34) the four ended up in ninth place after posting a 8:24.90, an amazing jump.

All four swimmers bested their personal best by at least two seconds. Wow.

Flickinger is a Spring Grove student, Dotzel attends York Catholic, Stewart and Kucherich are students at York Suburban.

Also on Thursday, Stewart placed 21st in the 200 free with her time of 2:04.61.

Although none of the York Y swimmers that competed on Friday qualified for the finals, it was still an outstanding performance by coach Michael Brooks' crew, which posted a total of four Olympic Trial cut times this week.

That's the question many Philadelphia Eagles fans -- and indeed fans all around the league -- must be asking themselves now. No doubt the Eagles signing of Michael Vick came as a huge shock, and it certainly sparked the anger of many fans and animal rights activists, including some in York County.

But Vick is trying to show the public he is, indeed, a different person. He has partnered with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to try and educate inner-city youths about the evils of dogfighting and animal torture.

While reporting for our local reaction story on Vick on Friday, I stumbled onto an interview with HSUS' Chief Operating Officer, Michael Markarian, who offered an interesting take on Vick's efforts with the HSUS, and just how much he could mean to the effort to stop dogfighting.

Markarian said Vick has already participated in two HSUS sponsored events: One in Chicago this week, one last week in Atlanta.

"It seemed to have a big impact," Markarian said of Vick's appearances. "We talked to kids afterward who said they've seen dogfights in their own neighborhoods. We think that Michael Vick's participation could really turn this problem around."

Of course there's a big "if" to all this. That's if Vick sticks with the program, and if all the remorse he's shown isn't just a ploy to win back his spot in the NFL.

"It's hard to know what's in a man's heart, but it seems to us like he's very sincere," Markarian said. "He knows what he did is terrible and he wants to make amends. He said to the group in Chicago if I can reach 50 kids or 100 kids, maybe I can save more dogs than I hurt.

"We were skeptical frankly. No one was tougher on Michael Vick than we were. But we also want people to be able to change and be better. We want to give people the opportunity."

Markarian understood that there will be some who never forgive Vick for his sins, but said he hopes to "channel that anger into something that's productive and stops animal cruelty."

"We believe that nothing can be changed by continuous punitive treatment. But a lot can be gained if Michael Vick becomes an ambassador and something against dogfighting. We think that can change a lot of lives. Lives of dogs and lives of young men.

"It's up to Michael to show that he's serious. Serious about the work and serious about sticking it out."

Teammates Hali Flickinger (4:52.51) and Julia Kucherich (4:53.24) finished 11th and 14th respectively in the women's 400 individual medley.

Both Flickinger and Kucherich swam Olympic Trial cut times as did Stewart in the 100 fly.

These are great performances against some of the nation's best at the meet which runs through Friday.
