Take that, Tiger!

During a media event to commemorate the opening of a new Tiger Woods-designed golf course in Asheville, N.C., in early October, one 12-year-old stole the show.

Woods hit two ceremonial drives at The Cliffs at High Carolina, both of which sailed into the trees. He then offered the crowd of more than a hundred spectators the opportunity to tee it up and try to outdrive him. Nobody took the challenge -- until young golfer Mark Benevento Jr. stepped up.

With all eyes on him, the 12-year-old calmly whacked a 200-yard drive straight down the fairway.  Tiger said he'd like to see that shot again, and Mark obliged, sending another shot straight and true.

Exotic golf outing

As I was perusing the world news, I came across an interesting story by Agence France-Presse about the world's longest golf course, which is set to open in Australia next month.
The course, called The Nullarbor Links, reportedly stretches along 848 miles (1,365 kilometers) of desert highway with holes in 18 towns and service stations along the way. The whole course spans two time zones and encompasses more real estate than the entire length of Britain.
"This is the longest golf course in the world. It's unique terrain, there's something for everybody," project chairman Don Harrington said.
The course, conceived five years ago "over a couple of beers," is meant to attract tourists to the Eyre Highway, which traverses the desolate Nullarbor Plain and hugs part of Australia's southern coastline, according to the news agency.
Golfers will stop at one roadhouse, play a hole, then drive on to the next tee -- 62 miles (100 kilometers) down the road in some cases. The par-71 course will take three or four days to complete, and each player  will be awarded a certificate when they finish.

Quest for a 95 (and a gratuitous Caddyshack clip)

There really is nothing better than a golfing on a nice summer day.

But, there's really nothing more frustrating than golfing on a nice summer day.

After a two-year absence from the links, I've determined that this summer is the season I get my golf game in order. My goal is to consistently hit a 95 by the end of this summer.

I know, not the loftiest of goals, but hear me out.

Watch out for that bear!

The most exciting news of the day from the U.S. Senior Open Championships (for me anyway) is the appearance of a large black bear that pranced across the fairway:

Notice how no one seems particularly inclined to get the heck out of there.

Senior Players Championship update

From golf correspondent Al Gregson...

Baltimore-area favorite and University of Maryland graduate Fred Funk has committed to play in the 2007 Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, the last of the five majors on the Champions Tour and the first to be played at historic Baltimore Country Club.

Another area favorite, Jim Thorpe, who graduated from Morgan State in Baltimore, is also in the field. Thorpe won the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup tournament in 2006, giving him at least one win and $1 million in the last seven campaigns on the Champions Tour.

Shaull, Miller win at Hanover Country Club

Max Shaull, 58, of York captured the Hanover Country Club men's championships on Sunday afternoon with a 2 and 1 victory over Alex Yalch.

In the women's final, Karen Miller notched her eighth championship with a 3 and 2 triumph over Nancy Sheppard.

Starting with J.W. Gitt in 1926, the men's tournament has produced local golfing legends such as Pee Wee Small, Karl Schoffstall, Jock Sneddon and, most recently, John Teel, who has been the leading winner since the tournament went to match play in 1984.
