Important monkey business in Cambodia

A bonanza of gorillas discovered

In this photo provided by the Wildlife Conservation Society, a baby gorilla shouts from atop its mother's back in the Republic of the Congo on July 31. Female gorillas produce on the average one baby about every five years. A new census conducted by WCS and the government of the Republic of the Congo tallied more than 125,000 western lowland gorillas in the northern part of the country. Previous estimates from the 1980s placed the entire population of western lowland gorillas, which occur in seven Central African nations, at less than 100,000.

Everything's in on the health craze

A western lowland gorilla munches on a monkey chow biscuit at the Chicago Zoological Society's Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, Ill. Thanks to mounting research on wild animals' food needs, today's zoo staffers are trying new feeding tricks to keep their animals healthy and happy. The days of letting visitors throw marshmallows to the animals are mostly history at zoos around the country, replaced by a growing focus on diet and nutrition that parallels the nutrition craze in humans.

The top photo is a photo of Opus, a male Saki monkey at Prospect Park Zoo in New York. Saki monkeys are native to Brazil and other South American countries. While not an endangered species, sakis are vulnerable to the destruction of their habitats by humans.

In the bottom photo, Opus (right) gives a kiss to Winola.

Celebrity orangutan passes away

Ah Meng, the oldest Sumatran orangutan in captivity, died at age 48 at the Singapore Zoo earlier this month.

For decades, Ah Meng met celebrities and starred as a poster girl for Singapore's tourism campaign.

Just hanging around

An Australian investment firm announced that it would spend about $10 million in an agreement with authorities in Malaysia to protect more than 74,130 acres of forests that are home to orangutans, pygmy elephants and other endangered species.

Critically endangered great apes

With wild populations being decimated at alarming rates in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the recent birth of a male infant named Tutapenda, left, on Oct. 29 is a significant milestone for conservation efforts. He joins his 2-month-old half-sister Mali who is also being hand-raised due to medical complications at birth.

Please ... do not give bread to the monkeys

The village, once considered a model village in Udhampur district, has been facing monkey menace for several years, leading to a mass migration of 70 percent of the families. Students in the school often have to confront the monkeys to pursue their studies.

In this Associated Press photo released by China's Xinhua News Agency, a monkey carries its baby in a swimming pool in the Nanwan Natural Reserve, Lingshui County, south China's Hainan Province. Nanwan, China's first natural reserve aimed to protect macaques, has become not only the harbor of around 2,000 macaques but also one of the favorite resorts for tourists in Hainan. Owing to the hot weather in the island province, monkeys in the reserve have learned to enjoy themselves in swimming pools.
