See Dakota skate

| | Comments (0)

The results show that Dakota Welty can skate. Already this summer, the 15-year-old York resident has collected a trio of top-three finishes in three events on the Gatorade Free Flow Tour -- a national tour for amateur skateboarders ages 18-and-under. Welty's dreams of turning pro, it seems, may not be so far fetched.

But why settle for results when the magic of YouTube allows you to see Welty skate for real? Here are two compilations of some of the up-and-comer's slickest moves.

The second day of the Santa Clara International Grand Prix was held Friday and the following York YMCA swimmers had success:

Caleb Tuten finishing 21st in the men's 400 individual medley (4:37.64), Chris Kramer, 26th in the same event (4:40.95).

The women's 400 Free Relay team of Sada Stewart, Hali Flickinger, Sarah Dotzel and Julia Kucherich placed 19th with a time of 4:02 56.

Thanks to my friend Gerry Kucherich (Julia's father) for sending me these updates.

Six swimmers from the York YMCA are competing at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix, which began Thursday evening.

Two swam during the opening evening, 14-year-old Hali Flickinger finished an impressive 13th overall in the women's 1,500 yard freestyle with a time of 17:28.94.

In the men's competition, Chris Kramer, 18, swam the 800 free in 8:38.06, which was good enough for 30th place.

Who says video games are tough to master?

Bob Lawrence of Spring Grove submitted this photo of his 6-year-old daughter, Ireland, who recently bowled a perfect game -- a 300 -- in Wii Bowling. (Hey, we're committed to covering the entire realm of sports here on The Lineup Card.)

Bob writes: "We know fully what an accomplishment it is to bowl 12 strikes in a row. What just blows us away is that our 6-year-old daughter did it! We videotaped the last few frames, as she was nearing the end. I have enclosed a photo of our daughter posing with her 300."

BCS still terrible

The satirical newspaper The Onion delivers as usual with its recent article: "Cheering Fans, Thrilling NCAA Tournament Disgust BCS Officials."

Here's a taste.

"I frankly cannot even believe what I'm seeing, and I can't stomach the sight for long," said a pale, trembling Jack Swarbrick, the Notre Dame athletic director who, along with the commissioners of the major conferences, manages the complicated system of polls and computer rankings that make up the Bowl Championship Series in college football. "The elegant logic of actually having teams play one another instead of having a council of their betters select which team is superior to which--that is not what sports is all about."

"And the fans...urgghh...simply enjoy their teams' triumphs or mourn their defeats. Where are the heated arguments? Where are the unsettled disputes that will fester forever?" said Swarbrick, a sheen of feverish sweat curdling on his face. "Oh, God, I think I got vomit on my tie."

I still think it falls short of Will Forte's mock love song to the BCS from Saturday Night Live a few months ago, but any insult directed at the worst aspect of college football is a good thing.

Criticism of William Penn's Greatest Athletes

Gregg Clark of Dallastown sent us the following letter:

Regarding the top 10 from York High (York Daily Record, Jan. 13), I'm a serious candidate that was overlooked.
I made all-county in 1988. I was also voted top 24 in the county, and to date there has never been a kicker in the county that could ever kick as good as me.
I then went to play ball in Europe for two different teams, The Monheim Sharks and the Zoeling Hurricanes.
I also made the York High hall of fame. Now the few you posted in the top 10, some didn't even make the hall of fame. Another that should have made it was Ty Doleman. He went to Pitt-Johnstown, then was a Globetrotter, then played pro ball in China. How about Mike Murray? He's played in the Army for years.
Kia Cooper, Yolanda Atwater, Brad and Harold Sprenkle, Scott Dean, Barry Generett, Chris Sharp ... the list goes on.
I thought the Daily Record looked into things before they wrote it. Apparently not in this matter.
It's just like growing up in the city, the Daily Record always pointed out the bad things that the city kids did, front and back pages. But when the kids stand out, they may get two or three lines.
Good job, Daily Record, keep putting down the York City kids. I bet that your paper will see a lot of letters from a lot of angry York City people that should have made it. Good job.

Rivals for a good cause.

Even the most bitter of rivals can do great things together as displayed when the Red Lion girls' basketball team hosted Dallastown Tuesday night in the first annual "Pink game for cancer awareness.

The "Crosstown Clash" was the brainchild of coaches Don Dimoff of Red Lion and Dallastown's Tory Harvey.

The Lion players wore pink shirts and shorts with white trim and black writing while the Wildcats donned white shirts/shorts with pink trim and writing.

In addition to the special uniforms, pink or black "Crosstown Clash" tee shirts were sold and two spirit baskets from each team were raffled off. Collections were taken at various locations throughout the night, along with the 50-50 raffle.

As you can see, the Lions' fans were out in pink.

Michele King, pictured above during her sophomore year at Spring Grove, was named Lady Vol Athlete of the Week Tuesday.

King won two individual events and swam on four first-place relay teams this weekend in Bloomington, Ind. The No. 13 Lady Vols defeated No. 11 Indiana and No. 19 Michigan this weekend.

One of the top swimmers in York County history, King qualified to swim in four events at the U.S. Olympic Trials this summer. She placed 10th in the 50-meter freestyle, and returned to the Vols as a junior this winter.

Speculation becomes reality

finally.jpg When Northeastern athletic director Bryan Stephens was a student at the high school from 1990 to 1993, soccer was his passion -- so much so, that he came back four years later after graduating college to become a coach in the program and never left.

It didn't stop Stephens and his friends from considering how them and their peers might have done were they have played on the gridiron.

"Still, my buddies and I will sit and drink and say: 'Man, imagine if we would have played football? So-and-so could have been here, so-and-so would have been doing that,'" Stephens said.

Nemo scratched from card

Perhaps it's a precursor of what type of show TKO Promotions will put on in a little under 30 minutes.

It could be bad luck.

But there is no denying promoters failed to deliver when they scratched York's Eric Nemo from the professional boxing card at the Valencia Ballroom.
