When Northeastern athletic director Bryan Stephens was a student at the high school from 1990 to 1993, soccer was his passion -- so much so, that he came back four years later after graduating college to become a coach in the program and never left.

It didn't stop Stephens and his friends from considering how them and their peers might have done were they have played on the gridiron.

"Still, my buddies and I will sit and drink and say: 'Man, imagine if we would have played football? So-and-so could have been here, so-and-so would have been doing that,'" Stephens said.

But there is no denying promoters failed to deliver when they scratched York's Eric Nemo from the professional boxing card at the Valencia Ballroom.

A state Senate bill that would increase certain hunting license fees beginning in the 2009-10 season received public support Monday from Pennsylvania Game Commission executive director Carl Roe.

Senate Bill 1527 is sponsored by state Sen. Charles T. McIlhinney Jr. (R-Bucks), who is the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee chair.

Now that the World Horseshoe Pitching Championships have come and gone from the York Expo Center (read about the men's champion and women's champion), Carl "Red" Arnold of Jacobus has checked in with some local horseshoes history.

Arnold writes: "I doubt if there are many people who would remember the Smoketown Horseshoe Team shown on this enclosed pictured. ..."

The York County Silver Bullets semi-pro football team (1-0) will host its first home game of the season this Saturday (July 26) at Central York High School.

Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. against the returning league champs, the Conshohocken Steelers.

Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for students.

The Silver Bullets won their season opener on July 19, beating the Montgomery County Rams, 35-8.

Zach McLain, a 2005 Dallastown High School graduate who was a two-time Daily Record/Sunday News all-star diver while competing for the Wildcats, is the subject of a lengthy new article on ESPN.com.

Normally, that would seem like a pretty sweet accolade for an athlete.

In McLain's case, however, it was a hellish -- and ultimately inspirational -- journey that led the national media to focus on his story.

McLain broke four vertebrae in his neck and suffered a huge gash in his head while diving at a swimming hole near his grandparents' cabin in Wellsboro, Tioga County, in July 2007. But, amazingly, just six months after the accident, McLain returned to competition for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point's diving team.

"It's a story of victory in the sense of an individual who was dealt a challenge of life," Army diving coach Ron Kontura told reporter Adam Rittenberg for the 1,600-word story.

McLain's tale was also told by The NCAA News in February.

NOTE: Richard Sanders in San Antonio sent us this letter after reading reporter Jeff Frantz’s 2006 article, “Pecs, pink pills and powers: How York played a role in the steroid controversy,” recently on our Web site (www.inyork.com/ydr). Louis Riecke was a New Orleans native who, at age 35, developed into a champion lifter after Dr. John Ziegler convinced him to take Dianabol. Riecke served as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ strength coach from 1970-1980.)

I traveled down from New York City in 1958 with Larry Mintz, Morris Weisbrott and a couple of other Elechester lifters to the Teenage Nationals. I placed in the Junior and Senior Southern AAU contests in 1961 and met Louis Riecke. He was impressive and soft-spoken with a personable humility.

I knew he used isometrics, so in 1963 while at Selfridge AFB in Michigan, I made a two-pipe-and-chain gadget and did early morning squat, pull and press isometrics to enhance my afternoon training.

The American Legion all-star game will be played at Sovereign Bank Stadium at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 6. Admission is free.

This is the first year that the York-Adams County American Legion baseball program has paired up with the York Revolution to play the all-star game at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
