See Dakota skate

The results show that Dakota Welty can skate. Already this summer, the 15-year-old York resident has collected a trio of top-three finishes in three events on the Gatorade Free Flow Tour -- a national tour for amateur skateboarders ages 18-and-under. Welty's dreams of turning pro, it seems, may not be so far fetched.

But why settle for results when the magic of YouTube allows you to see Welty skate for real? Here are two compilations of some of the up-and-comer's slickest moves.

Exotic golf outing

As I was perusing the world news, I came across an interesting story by Agence France-Presse about the world's longest golf course, which is set to open in Australia next month.
The course, called The Nullarbor Links, reportedly stretches along 848 miles (1,365 kilometers) of desert highway with holes in 18 towns and service stations along the way. The whole course spans two time zones and encompasses more real estate than the entire length of Britain.
"This is the longest golf course in the world. It's unique terrain, there's something for everybody," project chairman Don Harrington said.
The course, conceived five years ago "over a couple of beers," is meant to attract tourists to the Eyre Highway, which traverses the desolate Nullarbor Plain and hugs part of Australia's southern coastline, according to the news agency.
Golfers will stop at one roadhouse, play a hole, then drive on to the next tee -- 62 miles (100 kilometers) down the road in some cases. The par-71 course will take three or four days to complete, and each player will be awarded a certificate when they finish.

What says holiday more than hot dogs?

Doesn't that look yummy?

To follow up on my previous post, it's more hot dogs than you can stuff down your throat in 12 minutes.

That's right. The Nathan's Famous Hot Dog annual eating contest. This was my first time actually watching the event live, only because my husband put it on the TV and wouldn't let go of the remote.

One word: Ew.

I could only watch a few seconds before I felt sick. It was funny to watch Joey Chestnut try to speak afterward - he could barely get out a thought.

Elephants + hot dogs = cross-species throwdown.

To get you pumped for the Fourth of July and Saturday's Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, here's a little gem of a contest.

The animal contestants: 3 Asian elephants -- Bunny, Susie and Minnie -- all in their 40s

Weight: 9 tons

The human contestants: The corned beef hash world champion, the cranberry sauce world champion and a blueberry pie eater.

Weight: 500 pounds

Stat of the day: 505-143: Hot dogs the elephants ate in 6 minutes compared to the humans.

Fast fact: The elephants even paused to eat fresh fruit, which did not count toward scoring.

The two MJs

So while watching a plethora of Michael Jackson videos on MTV today (side note: I haven't seen that many videos since, oh, about 1992) "Jam" came on, which I had totally forgotten about.

I don't really think the song is especially good, but the video featuring Michael Jordan is hilarous. Especially Jordan trying to dance at the end.

Michael Jackson - New Music - More Music Videos

Plus you get bonus Heavy D and Kris Kross.

This would be my personal favorite right here, but "Beat It" is a close second - and this is of course without taking any of the Jackson 5 stuff into account. The unforgettable lead in, plus Eddie Van Halen equals good stuff. Enjoy.

Michael Jackson - New Music - More Music Videos

And this would pull up as a close third. I even like the Alien Ant Farm version.

Michael Jackson - New Music - More Music Videos

What a cake

Daily Record/Sunday News Penn State writer Frank Bodani is a Pittsburgh fan in most sports. In fact, he even wrote a recent column explaining this.

So, to help celebrate Frank's 40th birthday, his wife Shelly Bodani had this cake made for him and delivered it to the newsroom.

The cake is a close replica of the 1971 Roberto Clemente baseball card and staff photographer Jason Plotkin was kind enough to get a picture for us.

The work is outstanding ............... and delicious.

Ahhh, there's nothing like watching a bunch of 7- and 8-year-olds play baseball.

Sure, they don't hit as far, catch as good or throw to the right base like major leaguers do (supposed to anyway), but I'll take watching these kids over forking over a week's pay to sit in the nosebleed section of an MLB park anyday.

My son finished his third season with the Spring Grove Little League Assoc. today, and I have to commend and thank his coaches for giving their time. As a former coach, I know how hard it can be to juggle family with coaching responsibilities. And this particular group of coaches really made the season enjoyable for my son.

So here's a big shoutout to coach Tony Miller and all his assistants.

Have you thanked a volunteer today?

The Associated Press felt the need to let the world know that Manny Ramirez has a cold.
Is this really necessary? Do we care? Do you care?

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Manny Ramirez is not feeling well.
The suspended slugging outfielder has apparently caught a bug that's been going around the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Manager Joe Torre says Ramirez has a cold and is running a slight fever. Torre says he had a brief bout with laryngitis recently.
Ramirez is serving a 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug rules.
The Dodgers have not settled on a date for Ramirez to begin his 10-day rehab assignment before he is scheduled return on July 3 at San Diego. Torre said that should be determined by the end of the week.

A view that no longer exists

I was recently helping my mom clean out her basement -- which partially involves going through all of the stuff my grandmother and great-grandmother pack-ratted over the years and stuffed in envelopes and boxes and filing cabinets -- and I stumbled across this postcard from the 1970s.

It's quite a blast from the past, showing three sports complexes in south Philly -- two of which don't exist anyone.

From top to bottom are:

1. John F. Kennedy Stadium, which was originally Philadelphia Municipal Stadium. Among other things, it was the home of the Philadelphia Eagles for a short period in the 1930s and 1940s; the host stadium for the Army-Navy Game from 1936 to 1979; and the site of the American portion of Live Aid in 1985. The stadium was demolished in 1992.

2. The Spectrum, which opened in 1967 and will close its doors forever this fall. It is scheduled for demolition in late 2009 or early 2010. Its most famous tenants, of course, have been the Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers. Plus there have been countless concerts, circuses and pro wrestling events held there.

3. Veterans Stadium, which opened in 1971 and was demolished in 2004. Its concrete bowl was the home of the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Phillies, among other teams.

Funny what you find in a basement. What memories does this postcard evoke for you?

Who says video games are tough to master?

Bob Lawrence of Spring Grove submitted this photo of his 6-year-old daughter, Ireland, who recently bowled a perfect game -- a 300 -- in Wii Bowling. (Hey, we're committed to covering the entire realm of sports here on The Lineup Card.)

Bob writes: "We know fully what an accomplishment it is to bowl 12 strikes in a row. What just blows us away is that our 6-year-old daughter did it! We videotaped the last few frames, as she was nearing the end. I have enclosed a photo of our daughter posing with her 300."

Job well done

Hats off to the York College athletic staff for putting on a great show during the YAIAA girls' championship game between West York and Eastern York (above).

While a facility like the Grumbacher Center, a true neutral site that holds 1,800 people, is a great place to play a showcase game, it is the little things done by the staff that makes the event so special.

The pregame music was great and while I am showing my age by saying how much I liked it, the students from both schools loudly joined the sing-along of "Sweet Caroline," complete with the non-Neil Diamond line, "So good, so good, so good."

The national anthem is followed by the introduction of the non-starters from both teams.

Then, the packed house produced a collective gasp as the lights went out and under spotlight, the starters from both squads are introduced by York Revolution radio voice Darryl Henry, a York College grad.

For a building more like an arena than a gym, it gets loud in there.

Of course, Spartan sports information director Scott Guise and his assistant Brent Duffy made our job in the media easier too having by taking care of the stats electronically, something they team up quite well during York College home games.

Yes, showing off a facility like that is a great recruiting tool, however under the guidance of York assistant dean in charge of athletics and recreation Sean Sullivan the school gives plenty to the local sports community on night's like this.

Well done guys.
