South Western grad makes Hall of Fame

Mike Spangler, a former PIAA track and field champion at South Western High and scholastic coach at Bermudian Springs, was recently inducted into the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III Hall of Fame.

Spangler was honored for his success as a student at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove. There, he became a seven-time All-American whose times in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes remain school records.

The 1998 Susquehanna graduate was a four-time NCAA Division III champion and claimed 18 Middle Atlantic Conference championships. He was inducted into the university's sports hall of fame in 1993.

Market Street Mile Results

About 80 runners competed in the Market Street Mile on Sunday, including about a half dozen unicyclists. Sean Mulcahy was the overall male winner with a time of 4:22.29. Haley Freeman had the best time for females, finishing the mile at 5:59.51.

The top 10 finishers for men were the aforementioned Sean Mulcahy, Bill Chambers (4:29.01), David Rizzuto (4:35.65), Jake Schroeder (4:46.92), Kevin Hartzfeld (4:54.77), Ryan White (5:01.57), Craig Davis (5:05.59), Kurt Rishel (5:06.47), Ray Ricke Jr. (5:11.37) and Matt Shenk (5:12.77).

Top 10 finishers among women were the aforementioned Haley Freeman, along with: Nancy Rossi (6:00.87), Julie Hockenbury (6:02.16), Susanne Daly (6:09.72), Victoria Rizzuto (6:17.67), Margaret Moore (6:38.52), Jessica Bonaduci (6:53.20), Laura Tileston (7:18.94), Maddie McLain (7:20.47) and Katie Weikert (7:29.17).
