Gas prices causing pinch for prep sports

Across the country, some school districts are already facing tough choices on sports travel this fall, because of high gas prices.

In Franklin County, Ky., there's a new policy limiting road games to counties within a 50-mile radius on weeknights and a 75-mile radius on weekends.

Also in Kentucky, sports officials and referees who receive flat fees for staffing events are feeling the pinch, and some of them are deciding it's not longer affordable to hit the road anymore.

In Polk County, Fla., the school district cut two games from the maximum each team is allowed to play, to save money.

Meanwhile, in Tecumseh County, Okla., they're cutting bus routes but insisting that sports schedules will be played in their entirety. They have their priorities.

PGC urges hike in license fees

A state Senate bill that would increase certain hunting license fees beginning in the 2009-10 season received public support Monday from Pennsylvania Game Commission executive director Carl Roe.

Senate Bill 1527 is sponsored by state Sen. Charles T. McIlhinney Jr. (R-Bucks), who is the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee chair.

Oil prices hitting sportsmen, too

ELYSBURG -- Registration at the annual Colonial Classic and Pennsylvania State Shoot was down 15-20 percent this year.

The problems are both the increase in the price of gas and the economy says Bruce Murphy, president of the Pennsylvania State Sportsmen's Association, which sponsors one of the nation's largest trap shoot tournaments.
