Midnight shopping = wicked deals

Last Friday night, I hit the Giant grocery store on Carlisle after work. Because I work on the night news desk, that meant shopping around midnight.

I just needed a few items: olive oil, chocolate chips, tofu, etc. Not even worth grabbing a cart, really.

As I was walking down the ice cream aisle, I noticed a folding table covered in non-perishable groceries. Pasta, juice, vitamins, barbecue sauce, soup cans, croutons, all marked with a yellow discount sticker.

I had found the clearance table right after stocking. It was full of wonderful things at enviable prices.

Forgetting my grocery list, I went to town grabbing everything I needed or wanted or would never buy at retail. But at $.75? Sold.

If you want to fill your pantry on quality items (that might have a tattered appearance, but are still safe and delicious) and spend less than a dollar on each individual item, shop Giant at midnight.

    Stephanie,

I can appreciate shopping after midnight. I’ve done it for years. However, there are a few drawbacks, which should be mentioned. If the weekly “special” items aren’t stocked, sometimes there is no one available in customer service who can help you or give you a raincheck. And, you can only use self-checkout, which can create a problem if a price comes up wrong and it’s hard to find somebody to assist you. Otherwise, it’s great. I remember the fresh bakery items being put out really early in the morning at the Giant, so that’s a big plus, too.
