Being born with red hair is a feature that occurs in only 2-6 percent of the human population. Red-heads, or “gingers” as they are sometimes referred to as, do not in fact actually have red hair, but more of an orange or a very golden-brown color.
Although so few people posses this rare hair color naturally, it has been popping up more frequently in the last few years.
Because there are so many girls with brown, black or blond hair, most want to switch up their color for a more unique style. But some go too far. The current “it” look is red hair, and I don’t mean “ginger” red … I mean actual RED.
There are different variations to dying your hair red. Some girls dye all of their hair bright red, some go for a more subtle reddish-brown, others a light red tint and then there is a purple-red mix. Many of these styles are often mixed with black streaks or only incorporate sections in the hair.
Obviously these aren’t natural colors, so why is this one of the biggest emerging hair trends right now? Maybe these girls want to stand out, which is fine. But how different are they if almost every other girl has this same exact style?
Just because a lot of girls have tried this new hair fashion does not mean that many can pull it off. And the consequences for some have gone beyond just a trip to the hairdresser to undo the damage.
Within the last two years, there have been several instances in which girls have been suspended from school for dying their hair red. A 15-year-old from Wales was suspended from school because she died her hair “Rihanna red.” A sixth grader in Delaware was punished for walking around the school halls with pinkish-red hair. There have been other suspensions and reprimands issued because girls are dying their hair red. The reason for the controversy around the red-hair is because it is not natural and can be distracting, especially in a school or learning environment.
Many celebrities have tried to endorse the red-head look as well.
Rihanna is a prime example of where the red hair is too much. Other celebs, such as Marcia Cross and Lindsay Lohan (before she went downhill) were able to rock the natural red-hair look.
It’s a look that few have, many try and even less are able to achieve.
