In December 1867, the Gazette reported:
"FESTIVAL-- The Moravians are now holding a festival at Washington Hall for the benefit of their new church. They have the largest and finest assortment of fancy articles and toys ever offered at any similar enterprise in this place. Among the attractions is a large Christmas tree, illuminated by hundreds of jets of light, which is well worthy of a visit. A trifling fee only is charged admittance--ten cents, we believe. Give them a call."
A related item reported progress on:
"THE NEW MORAVIAN CHURCH--The new church edifice of the Moravians of this borough in North Duke street, between Main and Philadelphia, is under rood, and work on the interior is in progress. The cupola has been roofed over temporarily, until work can be resumed upon it in the spring."
You can still have a wonderful Christmas experience this holiday season at that same church building, now 140 years old. First Moravian Church, 39 N. Duke Street, is once again offering their Christmas Putz on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It can be described by an extremely extensive nativity scene accompanied with a sound and light narrative.
It is impressive, inspiring, and free to the public. As they said in 1867 "Give them a call."
