My friend, Ann, called me this weekend. We talked about life and other things when she asked, "Who is this Kimora, and why does she have her own show?"
The who she is is the easy part -- Kimora Lee Simmons is Baby Phat's CEO and the pampered princess of an ex-wife to hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons. The couple has two daughters together.
I've always been perplexed by the second half of the question, because I don't understand why she has her own show, either. Seems like most of her fans, according to this online conversation, aren't quite sure, either.
Kimora's reality series, "Life in the Fab Lane," airs on E! and the Style Network. In its first season, the show is described as, "An inside look at the glamorous life of Baby Phat CEO and devoted mom Kimora Lee Simmons."
Hmmm. . . I wonder if the people who wrote this have ever seen the show.
A more appropriate description would have something to do with its star whining and how she tortures her assistants with demands.
I've only seen a few episodes, which was more than enough, but I have to imagine her assistants and handlers sing slave spirituals and hope for freedom from their unforgiving master someday.
Her requests run the range of bratty to ridiculous, and she makes Mariah Carey's divatastic ways seem normal in comparison.
I'm waiting for the episode where she makes them kiss her ring to only refer to her as "the queen" or "our ultimate most fabulous woman ruler."
I bet her folks keep Rolaids in business, because they are always in a panic about Kimora's wants, I mean, needs, and seem to worry about losing their lives if they displease her.
And is it just me, or does her face looked really pinched or over-botoxed?
Don't get me wrong - I'm not being a hater. I commend The Ultimate Most Fabulous Woman Ruler on her success as a businesswoman. I'm just curious as to why she has her own show.
I guess it fall in the same category as to why Brooke Hogan, Denise Richards, Pamela Anderson and others have their own reality shows.
We're in a recession and super-desperate for television shows. We'll take just about anything, which may be the only explanation.
Ok, I'm done. Let the hate mail from Kimora lovers begin.

A-HA! It is clear to me now....
I read the E comments you linked to - I ahev to say - success? Well, maybe. But isnt this largely her husband's idea and company? Or at least funded and started by him. I just am having a hard time getting that someone so apparently self centered (and who runs around calling themselves a mogul and a model - I dont think she is anymore, right?) could run a company...of course, I guess editing can make you look anyway they want....
I saw one episode where she was crying buckets over her (I think) 7-year-old daughter getting her hair straightened for the first time.
Uh, really?
Yeah, I cried when we cut my kid's hair the first time.
But she seemed to be weeping over the 'rite of passage' of her little girl getting her first 'grown up' hairdo.
THE KID IS SEVEN!!
Sheesh. Let your little girls be kids, ok?
