Healthy habits that aren't

| | Comments (1)

Think what you're doing is healthy?

This slideshow shows several things we think are healthy, but aren't.

I was shocked at some of the stuff on the list.

Personal trainers at Lifestyles Fitness will hold free, 45-minute, outdoor fitness boot camps in parks in York and Hanover the week of March 30.

The "team" training program includes fun exercises, hikes and team relays designed to burn calories and tone the body. It is for all ages and fitness levels. The boot camp also offers motivation and support to make lifestyle changes.

An ongoing, three-day-a-week boot camp program will be offered April through November at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. in York and Hanover.

For details, call 650-6537 or visit their Web site.

Hot hair and weight loss

This just in from "Friends: The Salon" in York:

Several stylists and customers took the weight loss plunge together a few weeks ago and all seem to be succeeding!

Friends' owner Rhon Friend said the crew is using a herbal supplement that has really changed their lives and weights.

He estimates that at least 10 of the salon's customers and staff members, are succeeding on the plan. The salon is also selling the supplement at the shop at 101 N. Newberry Street in York.

On client, Aliecia Chin, lost 80 pounds with the bee pollen plan, and is shown here in her before and after photos.

So, here's a shout-out and a congrats going to the Friends salon folks for their weight-loss efforts, and wishing them the best of luck as they continue their work to be healthy.

To learn more about Friends, go to the salon's Web site at www.friendsthesalon.com.

(I've never taken the supplement, so I can't personally testify about it. If anyone tries it, let me know how it goes for you. I'll post your results here. I have, however, had my hair done there, and they do an excellent job.)

Going to vs. doing

Is it just me,or is saying that you're going to do something almost certainly means you won't?

I was thinking about this because of all the conversations I've had and been part of that included the fatal "going to."

You tell a friend, "I'm going to start going to the gym more."

It sounds really good. I think it makes you sound like you really are going to do it.

But we all know it leaves you lots of wiggle room NOT to do it.

I sometimes wonder if we say stuff like this to people knowing good and darn well we aren't planning on doing anything.

I'm going to. . .buy groceries, learn a new language, be a better friend, clean out the garage, work longer hours, eat less carbs. . . whatever it is, this phrase helps us impress people - but doesn't hold us to actually doing it.

We should. We know we need to.

But we don't.

My point?

I'm been telling folks how I was "going to" do lots of stuff to get back on track with my weight loss.

I've said I'm going to. . .

work out more

eat less

be a better gym buddy

cut out sodas

actually go to the gym

eat out less

eat healthier

go to the grocery store. . .

How many things have I done on this list?

Uh. . .

Well. .. .

One.

I went to the grocery store yesterday, after about three weeks of stalling and eating out for almost every meal. I couldn't really afford it, but I used my would-be grocery money to eat out and avoid shopping.

Sad, huh?

That's it. I'm really going to do more. Really.

I'm serious.

Does anyone else struggle with this one?

Hello?

Bueller? Bueller? (80s movie reference. . . )

A study (yes, this is an entry about ANOTHER health study), shows a like between active transportation" and less obesity in 17 industrialized countries across Europe, North America and Australia.

The translation: If you walk, ride a bike or use public transportation, your country is leaner.

I found this next part to be just shocking! (Ok, not really - I can totally believe this.)

"Americans, with the highest rate of obesity, were the least likely to walk, cycle or take mass transit, according to the study in a recent issue of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health," the article states.

So, what can we do?

Take the train.

Walk to work.

Get a bike.

If other countries can do it, we can do, right?

Time to let go

My closet is a mess.

Remember the post I did on how organized and beautiful it is?

No more.

I think I may have to break up with my skinny clothes.

Some keep them around as a motivation. They just depress me.

The cute shirts in smaller sizes are just a reminder that I can't fit them.

I know, I should be more positive, and use them as a goal to aspire to get back into them.

I've tried that, but it doesn't seem to be working. Looking at the cute jeans I could fit many, many moons ago seems to be making it worse.

So, they've got to go.

I weighed myself Monday.

It was not a high moment of the day.

274.

Yes, you read that right.

274.

This is the heaviest I've ever been. I wanted to cry and was in a panic.

However, I've got a plan.

Happy Holidays to you

Hi guys. I hope you and your loved ones are having a Merry Christmas.

Enjoy your holiday, but don't overdo it with the goodies and food!

Here's to the holiday, and a new year that means new opportunities for weight loss for us all.

Merry Christmas, dear readers.

With summer ending, some of us can't wait for fall and boot weather.

However, you do not want to hide any extra pounds under those cute winter sweaters and matching slacks.

This short story provides a few obvious tips that can serve as a reminder.

What other ways do you keep the weight off during the fall?

I lost three pounds

First of all, I'd like to say, Go Michele, Go Michele, Go Michele. . .

Sorry about that. I got lost in my own hype.

For those who have been tuning in, I'd been stuck at 247 pounds for two weeks. Before that, I'd dropped a pound or two, but those pounds found their way back home - to my hips and other jiggly parts.

I was past frustrated. I kept wondered why my pounds wouldn't stay away, especially since I had practically given up fried food!

Ok, I didn't really give up all fried foods. I have a special, "weekend only" rule for fried food.

Anywho, I was mad that I wasn't losing, so I had to take stock of my eating habits, to try to figure out what was going on.

I figured out that I was drinking a number of calories a day in the form of soda, sweet teas, flavored drinks and milkshakes.

So, much to my chagrin, I cut most of those things out, as well as really limited my salt intake. I went back to the basics with my diet, and really, really paid attention to what I was eating. I also did not eat any fast food.

Now, all I have to do is keep this up. I think I saw such a drop because I probably lost some water weight, too. Remember, healthy weight loss is 1 to 2 pounds a week. That's my goal.

If only that could happen every week. I'd be a happy camper.

So, let's say you've discovered a fabulous blog about weight loss that you visit regularly, even if only to laugh at its author. Say this blog has updates several times a week, and a place for you to leave your thoughts, suggestions or comments.

What can you do to show how much you enjoy the blog?

Hmmm. . . .what to do. . .

Poor little dog

If one of my cats ever get "lost," I hope one of you would have the heart to tell me where they ended up. You'd tell me, wouldn't you?

This poor, poor dog.

My sister, Gina, and I have made a pact that if we ever get too "pleasantly plump", whomever is smaller fattie would roll the larger fattie into the ocean so we can be with our fellow whales. We're both trying really hard on our diets, and we hope it doesn't get to that point.

However, we do have a plan if things get out of hand.

Thanks, Jackie for forwarding this funny, but inspirational photo. Say it with me - we will lose the weight. We will lose the weight!

Thank you

No, they didn't

I'm sure this woman has NO idea their very full bottom was photographed.

Fat people have to be careful. With obesity being called "an epidemic," we're the new targets for news stories.

With this in mind, I'm warning all my fellow fat people - watch out for the television news camera crews! They are everywhere, looking for fat folks like us for their obesity stories!

They especially like candid shots of you eating super-sized portions at a restaurant, or stuffing some large burger in your mouth.

So, fellow fat folks, protect ya necks (Wu-Tang Clan reference, that means, "Watch your back.")
I'm watching my backside (and trying to make sure it DOES NOT grow anymore!)

And yes, they did.

Disclaimers: "Evil camerapersons" DOES NOT include the wonderfully talented and professional news photographers I work with every day at the YDR/YSN. They're fabulous.
