Newsroom Conversations: What’s in a name?

Only a journalist has to make decisions like this. Normally, we refer to people by their last names after the first reference. However, in cases such as Kenny G, what do you do?

Reporter 1: Do I refer to him as Kenny or Kenny G? Do I use his last name? People know him as Kenny G. They don’t know his last name.

Editor 1: I’d treat him like Madonna. That’s not her name, but that’s how we know her.

Editor 2: Are you saying Kenny G is a Material Girl?
