More from Gov. Tom Corbett on Newtown, Conn., shootings

From spokeswoman Janet Kelley:

“This horrific tragedy reminds us that we must do everything in our power to prevent it from ever happening again.

“Our schools and law enforcement are already working together, making sure our children are as safe as possible and reviewing plans and procedures.

“Pennsylvania’s gun laws are among the best in the nation. Sadly, no law can prevent the actions of a deeply disturbed person intent on committing such violence.

“As a former Attorney General, Governor Corbett formed a Gun Violence Task Force to target illegal firearms trafficking and straw purchasers in Pennsylvania, resulting in hundreds of arrests and seizing more than a thousand firearms.

“Also, as Attorney General, Governor Corbett worked with schools, not only talking to children about safety, but also initiating a program to improve safety in such terrifying situations as an armed intruder.

“As for the mental issue component, the Governor said earlier this week that certainly all these incidents of violence clearly have something to do with mental illness. We need to take a look at what the facts are and what can be done – without a rush to judgment.’’
