Jesus, Satan and your mom are back: Primary write-in votes for York County

Sunday editor Scott Blanchard wrote in November about how Jesus, Jon Stewart, Stephen King and your mom all got at least one write-in vote in the 2012 general election.

So how did they fair in the May 21 municipal primary and 95th state House special election?

–Jesus, or Jesus Christ, got multiple votes, including from one person who wanted him to be the Republican nominee for York mayor.

— John R.W. Stewart got one Republican write-in vote for auditor in Windsor Township.

There’s no indication he is related to the “The Daily Show” host (who was born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz — there were no write-in votes for anybody named Leibowitz, either).

–Satan got one vote for Democratic nominee for West York Area School board.

–There were lots of write-in votes for Stephens, and some for Kings. But apparently none for the creator of Pennywise, the killer clown.

–Your mom got a Democratic write-in vote for York County district attorney. And your other mom got a Democratic write-in vote for York County controller. Both of those votes came from the same precinct.

As Scott wrote in November,  the write-in votes reveal voters’ anger, frustration, sense of humor and nostalgia.

But in the municipal primary, there’s often more at stake. Dozens of write-in candidates won a spot on the November ballot.

For instance, Republican Tom Kearney will appear on the fall ballot for York County district attorney as both the Republican and Democratic nominee.

The database below also includes write-in votes for the 95th state House special election.
