At one time in corporate America, the term "Big Blue" meant IBM. Now it means the movie "Avatar."
My wife and I went to see the 3-D version of the film at the Regal Cinema on Sunday afternoon. We -- and the approximately 300 other people who packed the theater -- each added our $10.25 to this weekend's national gross for the film of $48.5 million. And it has been running for four weeks! The film is well on its way to becoming the biggest grossing film in history.
The film -- in 3-D -- is visually stunning. The difference between a regular film and the new 3-D is the difference between radio and television and black and white television and color television. It is a technological marvel.
"Avatar" is like a prism: it depends on how you hold it on what you get out of it. Is it a complex science fiction flick? Or a message on ecology? Maybe thoughts on unleashed technology? Perhaps a dose of theology mixed in? Certainly politics. Surely corporate greed bashing.
All mixed together, the film works. With a running time of two and a half hours, you might wish for an intermission (remember when films had them?). So bring plenty of popcorn and drinks into the theater with you.
One thing is for sure: after "Avatar," any non-3-D film is going to be just another movie.
