Parade points

Last night, walking home late from the Harp and Fiddle with some friends, I saw
that there were many, many lawn chairs already dotting the sidewalk for the
Halloween parade today.

First of all, I didn't see these chairs on the way down the street, which
means people were putting them out there pretty late. Also, I have to say that
I'm pretty amazed that people still feel comfortable doing that.

I constantly hear from people who think they're going to get robbed the
minute they step foot in the city, so it's hard to believe that people are
perfectly fine with leaving their property on the sidewalk overnight. (I did see
a few who tied their chairs to light poles and other random objects.) I mean, my
newspaper doesn't last an hour on the sidewalk every morning. But on Sunday,
it looked like everyone's chairs and blankets were safe. That should restore
some faith in humanity, shouldn't it?

I went out for breakfast Sunday to find that people were already waiting for
the parade to begin around noon, which seems awfully early to be arriving for
a 2 p.m. parade.

I had to skip the festivities to work the night shift, unfortunately. I took a
ridiculously nonsensical route since Market Street was closed when I left around
2:30 p.m. I should have gone west and headed around the beginning of the parade,
but instead I took King Street east and had to go alllll the way to the end
before turning back around onto Philadelphia Street to get to West Manchester
Township. The wrong choice. But I made it to work all the same.
