Downtown driving

This news release arrived in my inbox yesterday:

"York City Police will be conducting a traffic enforcement detail for the next several weeks in the Downtown Business District, starting Thursday, January 15.

York City Police will be targeting the following violations: blocking the intersection; blocking crosswalks; improper turns; red light violations; improper lane changes; and other related moving traffic violations.

Any moving traffic violations during this detail WILL BE cited by the York City Police Department."

I was kind of happy to see it.  I see people running red lights in the city ALL the time. But I'm also going to have to be a little careful. Blocking the crosswalk sometimes gets me into trouble; it's one of those moments where I think I'm going to get to make a left turn, but then the light changes before I can, and suddenly I'm sitting in the crosswalk at a red light.

So watch what you're doing the next few weeks! I'll be really interested to see how many citations the police give out.

I also wonder about that.

In high school drivers ed (which was more than 10 years ago at this point; cringe) I remember my teacher telling us that if we were in the intersection when the light turns red we won't be cited for running a red light.

But it gets tricky when you are just on the crosswalk and can't back up.

I'm just waiting for all of the county folk to complain, even though they are breaking the law, the City will get blamed in one way or another.
