Leave nothing for the thieves

I am covering the cops shift today, and the daily check of the city police log told me that four people had GPS devices stolen from their cars Wednesday. Three were at the King Street garage. One had two DVD players stolen as well.

If I've learned anything after living in the city for three years, it's that you can't leave anything in your car. But you especially can't leave expensive electronic devices.

Not that emptying your car of anything valuable will assure that a would-be thief or vandal won't go after it anyway.  (See this entry or this entry.)

But leaving your GPS, DVD player or laptop seems like it will make you a much easier target. (And yes, I understand that maybe you can't remove a DVD player.)

I admit to having a very messy car with plenty of stuff in it. On any given day, the stuff I leave in there is likely to be a slew of pennies, an empty coffee cup, an old soda bottle  or an umbrella. Maybe a sweater.

I've often worried that my car would be hit because the holder for my satellite radio is visible in the car. I always removed the receiver and took it with  me, but I figured just the cradle would be tempting enough.

That's beside the point now, because I broke the radio receiver a few weeks ago. Maybe I should leave potential thieves a note.

My point is, it sucks that your car might be broken into at any given day or time. And it's not your fault if someone does. But try not to give someone more reason to break in.
