Hot dog wars?

Just about two weeks ago, I wrote a story about Double D's Dogs in York's square, and how it was the only hot dog stand downtown.

Then, on my way to work today, I saw another stand, with another blue and white umbrella, on the other end of the same block.

At first I thought Double D's might just be expanding, because Jody Moore had mentioned to me that they were thinking about buying a second cart and starting a second location.

But I checked while I was downtown for an interview, and it turns out Double D's has some competition.
Mary's Concession Stand, run by Mary and Dave Slenker, is the new hot dog vendor on the block. Monday was their first day.

The Slenkers, who previously traveled to events with their stand, said there was some confusion in the beginning. They'd wanted the location Double D's has, but they were told by a city official that it wasn't allowed. The official and the Slenkers didn't realize that particular regulation had been updated. Evidently, Jody Moore did.

So the Slenkers were set up outside a Home Depot, being told by that municipality they weren't allowed there either, when they saw my story in the paper on Double D's. So they tried for the city once again. This time, with permission from the county, the courthouse and the city, they set up on the corner of George and Philadelphia streets.

The first day was going great, Mary said. She thinks cities are the place for vendors to be, she said. They serve hamburgers and other items, too, and will add french fries to the list once approved.

"I think the courthouse is really loving it," Mary said.
