Bearcat basketball team honored by York City Council

bearcatbasketballteam.JPGThe William Penn Senior High School mens basketball team was recognized Wednesday by York City Council for winning the PIAA District 3 Class AAAA championship.

The Bearcats closed the 2010-2011 season with a 27-3 record — the third-best season in school history.

Coach Troy Sowers told council that all five seniors on the team have been accepted to college, prompting a round of applause from the standing room only crowd in council chambers.

Assistant coach David Gray said the team members buck the perception many county residents have about inner-city youth.

“You’re looking at a group of young men who do the right thing,” Gray said. “They make the right decisions, they do well in the classroom, they don’t give their teachers a lot of grief and if you could get to know these young men the way the coaches know them, you would just bubble over with pride as we do.”
