My college experience took me away for four years but since graduating in August, I’ve been back in my hometown of York. When I first returned, I constantly complained that my friends were either still away at school or had re-located somewhere else.
A lot of nights in 2011 consisted of me chilling with my dog on the couch watching bad re-runs of MTV shows. I started spending a lot of time downtown late last year when I realized York is not as nearly as boring as I thought it was.
A few weeks ago, I took my best friend to First Capitol Dispensing Company while she was on break from Temple University. She’d never been there before, and every 2 minutes, I’d hug someone there and ask, “How’s life/the family?”
After about five people, she said, “E.C., when did you become such a townie?” It hit me that she was right when I realized I knew 80% of the people in the bar, almost all of whom I’d met at various downtown events in the past six months. I felt a lot like my mom, who I call the Mayor, when it would take us 20 minutes to go 2 blocks because she’d stop and talk to someone she knew. Since I’ve moved downtown, this feeling is now pretty permanent.
There are some amazing events coming up this weekend. If you have a free moment, stop by. Who knows? You may become a regular and earn the elite status of “the York Townie.” Check out the FlipSide Blog for a full listing of events.
