Working in the city has its perks. While many businesses offer lunch discounts to city employees, one local business took an extra step to show thanks to emergency responders.

New Grounds Roasting Company recently announced they’ll be giving free coffee to city police and firefighters. Bring in your coffee cup or travel mug and they’ll fill it right up. They ask that responders come either in uniform or with ID.

New Grounds owner Jenne Anderson said in a news release: “The Emergency Responders of York City sacrifice so much for our community that I wanted to return the favor and do my part; we are just a small local company trying to do the right thing. We welcome all Emergency Responders to stop by our shop; we just want to help those who help us.”

Bistro 19 offers a discount to jury members and other court officials looking for a bite from the neighboring establishment.

JR’s Fresh Cut French Fries at Central Market York also offers 10 percent off to any city employee with ID.

What places do you like to go to when you want an affordable bite to eat?

On a beautiful spring day, you might see kids beginning a pick-up basketball game, or goofing off on playground equipment. But what’s the solution for children living in areas without play space?

Shut down the street and bring out the toys, says Play Streets.

York City, Capital Blue Cross and Eat Play Breathe York have partnered with The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and Partnership for a Healthier America to create new spaces for kids to play.

The first Play Streets event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. May 18 at Lincoln Charter School, 559 W. King St., York.

The event is free, with activities including Bring On Play’s Imagination Playground, BOP’s NEOS, The York Water Company’s water splash station, inflatables, caricature drawings, face painting, haircuts, healthy snacks, free T-shirts and prizes, and live local entertainment.

Phew!

Can’t make the May event? Play Streets events will also be held June 19, July 20 and Aug. 14.

The Olde York Street Fair is a Mother’s Day tradition — drawing visitors and their dollars to downtown York. But some residents said this year’s fair brought more than money, it also brought unwanted trash and traffic.

Melissa Rosario, who lives near Martin Library on East Market Street, said she was appalled when she looked out of her apartment window and saw litter everywhere but in a nearby trashcan, which looked almost empty.

When she left for work early Monday morning, the day after the street fair, Rosario said it was her neighbors, rather than a street cleaning crew who were picking up. And when she returned at 6 p.m., little progress had been made.

“When they were closing up (the fair), I did see a man with a leaf-blower blowing trash around. He blew it into one area and then left,” Rosario said. No one came to to clean up the pile and Rosario said she wasn’t sure if the man was employed by the city or not.

Although trash has been a constant problem after large events in the downtown area, “I think yesterday was probably the worst I’ve ever seen it,” she said. Some of her neighbors agreed, and a friend who owns a business in another downtown area told her trash was a problem there as well.

Rosario said she moved from Chicago to York about a year and a half ago. When large events were held in Chicago, the city always hired a crew for cleanup.

But in York, she said the residents of her neighborhood “feel like this is just what happens. … This is just a normal thing.”

Rosario said she plans to voice her complaints to the York City Council at their next meeting.

The trash “is a slap in the face to the people who live here because we have to deal with it afterward,” she said. “Something has to be done.”

You probably have heard about the proposed Greater York Regional Authority, which would look to regionalize municipal services among the city, West York and North York in an effort to save money.

The idea has been talked about by officials in all three municipalities. Some officials with West York and the city have raised questions and concerns about it.

So where does each municipality stand at this point?

Here’s a quick run down:

York City: The matter has been referred to the city council committee meeting on May 29, said Carol Hill-Evans, council president. A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. June 4 in City Council Chambers. The council will consider adopting the bill at 7 p.m. that night.

North York: A letter from the York County Community Foundation proposing the idea was read at the council meeting in March, borough manager Kevin Hevner said. The council briefly discussed it before tabling the issue to get more information. The council meets again May 13.

West York: A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 10. One council member made a motion at a meeting Monday night that the borough stop exploring the issue. It was defeated 3-2.

What do you think of the idea? Should the municipalities explore it? Do you think it could help to save money?

Expecting to add a dumpster to your property this weekend? There’s a permit for that. Revamping your plumbing? There’s a permit for that. Flooding your lawn with plastic flamingos in celebration of spring? Well, there’s no permit for that. But … Continue reading →

Expecting to add a dumpster to your property this weekend? There’s a permit for that. Revamping your plumbing? There’s a permit for that. Flooding your lawn with plastic flamingos in celebration of spring? Well, there’s no permit for that.

But if there was, you could apply for it at the city office of permits, planning and zoning. And now, thanks to an extension of hours at the permit counter, you could apply for it after 1:30 p.m. Friday if you wanted to.

The office hopes the hours will be a boon to all you weekend do-it-yourselfers. They want to help you cross off items on your to-do list you just haven’t been able to “get to.”

So, sleep late. Enjoy a leisurely picnic breakfast in Continental Square. And then saunter over to the city offices to pick up your sidewalk cafe application. Or perhaps you favor a special event health license? Either way, they’re open until 4 p.m.
