Dietitian for a day — or a shopping trip

The other day while shopping at the grocery store, a woman peeked in my basket and stopped me in my tracks.
“Have you tried egg whites before?” she said, pointing to the carton in my basket.
I told her yes, and she asked if they were any good.
I said that they’re pretty bland if you don’t season them, but that I like to mix them with bag.jpgsalsa, ground garlic and onion, and some low-fat cheese. I also suggested using them as a base for any omelet (one of my favorites is portobella mushrooms, fresh spinach, tomatoes and mozzarella.)
I explained to her that egg whites are better than eggs in terms of calories and cholesterol, and that 1/4 cup of egg whites is the equivalent of one egg, but more than half of the calories and no fat.
“So if my diet plan says that I can have one egg, I can have two?” she said.
“You can pretty much have three,” I said.

She told me that she’s in a “Biggest Loser” competition with a number of businesses and that she’s just starting out.
I can get pretty passionate when talking about nutrition. I think that was why she kept asking me more questions.
“What else do you have in there?” she said about my basket.
I showed her bread that I like (Nature’s Own Wheat Double Fiber) that has only 50 calories and 5 grams of fiber per slice, and recommended whole-wheat pasta.
I know I’m sort of a nerd, but I was pretty psyched when she asked me if I was a dietitian. I told her no, but that I’d like to start taking some classes to expand on my interest.
It felt really good to share my healthy food knowledge with someone. It felt even better that someone was genuinely interested.

You should talk to Susan Kopins. She’s a registered dietitian with Women’s Healthcare Group in York. From working with her and reading your blog, I can confidently say that the two of you would bond instantly. Let me know if you want her contact info.
