Maynard started his newspaper career in the 1960s when the Daily Record was known as the York Gazette. No other daily newspaper would hire the young black reporter, but he and J.W. Gitt connected, and the rest, as they say, is history... .
He went on to the Washington Post and later owned the Oakland Tribune.
Daily Record alumni are working at the New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer and Baltimore Sun. But none have achieved national prominence on the level of Bob Maynard. Unless, in his day, it was J.W. Gitt.

You are forgetting one of the Gazette's most celebrated reporter . He was one of the first investigative reporters in the US , Arthur W Geiselman. My father was the winner of 2 Heywood Broun awards and a Neiman Fellow class of 1964 while at the Gazette and numerous other journalism awards. He also was the first reporter to write about segration in York and the civil rights movement . Bob Maynard could not write a story when he came to the Gazette. My father mentored him and taught him how to write. Bob had no affection for the Gazette ,York or the Gitts.Many nights I would listen to Bob and my father talk about stories, politics ,social issues and the Gazette
