It's no Ripplet, but Spring Grove area gets weekly

| | Comments (1)

History is repeating itself in Spring Grove this week.

From 1897 to 1922, the Ripplet, a newspaper published each Friday, circulated in the Spring Grove area.

Starting Friday, the York Daily Record/Sunday News’ will include news from Spring Grove in the Weekly Record that will begin circulating in municipalities covered by the Spring Grove Area School District. The Spring Grove news will share space in the weekly on Friday with coverage of Dover, West York and West Manchester Township.

Friday seems to be the day of choice for Spring Grove-area news... .

The Ripplet still circulates, but in a far different form. It’s the newsletter for the Spring Grove Area Historical Preservation Society. http://www.springgroveboro.com/history.htm

Barbara Kling has edited the newsletter since 1987, and she packs it with stories and photos.

In the September edition, for example, President Ron Henry warns against throwing away boxes in storage without knowing their contents.

He tells about a former neighbor who threw away 20 boxes that had been in storage.

“I have no idea what was in them," she told Henry, “but I figured that if I haven’t needed the stuff in 30 years, I’m not going to need it the rest of my life."

He cites two other similar incidents.

“We can only imagine the history, heaven forbid the monetary value, of that which was intentionally destroyed in those three incidents," he wrote.

If the original Ripplet piques your interest, the preservation society has a full collection of the publication in its museum.
