U.S. 30 Drag-O-Way, Part III: 'We would watch the dragsters on trailers head for Thomasville'
This was the scene at the 2005 Musclecar Madness event at the York Expo Center, an event inspired by weekend racing at the York Airport - the U.S. 30 Drag-O-Way. Tim Rearich, a former York countian living out west, remembers the U.S. 30 Drag-o-Way, subject of a couple of previous posts.
He particularly remembers the radio ads that went something like this:
"Saturday, Saturday, Saturday night at the US 30 dragoway... ."
And he recalls the funny funny laugh they would have in the ad.
"I don't believe the basic background of the radio ad changed over the years, just the names and dates.
"My grandma had a house on Philadelphia St. when it was US 30 and we would watch the dragsters on trailers head for Thomasville. I left for the USAF the last year (79) they had the drags and didn't realize it had stopped until a couple of years later."
Organizers used the York Airport near Thomasville for their weekend drags, which lasted about 20 years before closing in 1979. The dragway is remembered with an annual event at the York Expo Center.

I too remember York US 30 dragway..only my friend and i would sit on the front steps of West York Hardware at Market and Adams streets at watch the cars comming BACK from the drags late on saturday nights in the summer. i also remember attending the "drags" several times. four of us would go in one car..three of us would hide in the trunk of the car and the driver would pay just one admission. once inside the place he would open the trunk and we would climb out. then we would split the cost of the admission with the driver three ways.the radio ads were really great. WSBA had the very best production people in the area at that time.
