Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter visited Lewisberry in northern York County in 1974.

On the bus and running late for his next stop, Carter made the driver stop and he got out to talk with a boy in a wheelchair. He told the boy he had a nephew like him and asked to say a prayer with the youngster.
"He knelt down and prayed," Schintz recalled. "No one else was there."
Schintz said he happened to notice that other-wise private interaction.
No record exists of Carter visiting York County in either the 1976 or 1980 presidential campaign season.
Joan Mondale stumped for Carter and her husband, vice-president candidate Walter Mondale in 1976, and First Lady Rosalynn Carter campaigned for her husband in 1980.
