This photo shows an unidentified trio at Eagle's Rock near York almost a century ago. (See two more photos of this scene below.) Also of interest: Noted U.S. photo archive captures York County, Pa., treasures and Google Images bring life and times of a trick shot artist, other York County, Pa., memories and 'The Commons' plays host to wonderful vintage photos and York County photo collection adds to historical record.

Remember Chimney Rock, an obscure formation in Hellam Township? The owner of that formation believes the rock is endangered by nearby blasting for a pipeline.

The controversy has brought that formation to the public's attention.

Now comes information about another outcropping with a scenic view, from a generous contributor, Bob Stolper.

Writing on the back of the three-photo set places Eagle's Rock at a location four miles southeast of York. The photos are dated May 28, 1910... .

The drop must be steep from Eagle's Rock. Notice the man in the hat holding onto his young companion.

I'm wondering if they're near the present location of Eagle's Nest Restaurant, atop the hill on Mount Rose Avenue. If so, the photos could be overlooking the Codorus Valley where the old Lincoln Highway (East Market Street/462) and present-day Route 30 run.

I ran the photos by someone who is a student of York County scenes. She noted that high cliffs are located along the Camp Betty Washington Road, not far from the Eagle's Nest, or on the other side of Interstate 83, perhaps in the location of Mount Rose Cemetery. Both locations would fit the description on the back of the photos.

And she shared my reaction, too.

"Wow, what a view," she e-mailed.

Thanks to Bob Stolper for bringing these photos to light.

I can't help thinking those photos were taken from Rocky Ridge Park, from the site where you can currently see Three Mile Island off in the distance.

It doesn't fit the "SE of York" description too well, but the view seems so familiar.

I don't think its the Eagle's Nest area, as the view doesn't seem to match up. The view off in the distant doesn't seem quite right.

Camp Betty Washington is more likely than the Eagle's Nest suggestion. But I still say check out the view looking north from the turning point on the trail at Rocky Ridge.

The rocky outcropping along Camp Betty Washington Road doesn't look out over a sweeping valley like the photo, but over a ravine-like area with Mill Creek at the bottom.

I vote for Rocky Ridge looking north toward Starview, but that wouldn't be 4 miles SE of York.

This picture is taken long before Lake Redman and Rt. 83. 4 miles SE of York would be in that area. Is it possible that this is a view of that valley looking south?

Darrell,

That's interesting thinking. Instead of visualizing the terrain now, what would the landscape looked like 100 years ago?

You could be right.

Could that be the view looking southwest from the Country Club of York toward Indian Rock Dam?
