With my critique of the pesky ghost tour growth industry in Gettysburg comes the question of what type of tours play in downtown York.
Downtown Inc., downtownyorkpa.com, is offering eight tours this year.
The Civil War, prized architecture and the Colonial/Revolutionary War era are among the themes. I'll join Lorann Jacobs in leading a tour of her statues. (See more below.)
And fortunately, only one ghost/haunted tour made Downtown Inc.'s list, but that house of cards promises to be propped up with stories of real history... .

Many York County residents know the work of Dallastown artist Lorann Jacobs: Continental Square's World War II memorial. Pal, the war dog, standing guard along the rail trail in York. And most recently, the Vietnam War memorial at the York Expo Center. Now, this tour provides an opportunity to meet the artist and hear her discuss her works of art in and around York's downtown. York Daily Record/Sunday News editor and historian James McClure will join her to provide information about the historical setting for each monument.
- Murals of York tours
According to a York County Heritage Trust news release: Join the Trust as it reveals the vibrant and colorful history of York County during its mural walking tours that will take place Tuesday- Saturday at 12 noon through the end of August. These free mural walking tours will depart from the Trust's Colonial Complex, 157 W. Market St., and will last approximately one hour. - Town meeting
The York Daily Record/Sunday News, WGAL-TV (Ch. 8) and the York Chamber of Commerce will hold a town meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 8, in the White Rose Room at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave. in West Manchester Township. "News 8 Today" anchors Ron Martin, WGAL 8 President and General Manager Paul Quinn and York Daily Record editorial editor Scott Fisher, columnist Mike Argento and I are hosts. The meeting is free and open to the public. Light refreshments and door prizes will be available.
- Presidential visits to York County
I will speak at the West Manchester Township Historical Society's monthly meeting about presidential visits to York County. The meeting is set for 7 p.m., July 19, at the West Manchester Township Municipal Building.
