York, Pa., Daily Record/Sunday News photographer Jason Plotkin captured this shot of chickens running loose as firefighters battled a fire that claimed their home, a barn in northwestern York County’s Franklin Township. Photographers picked their favorite shots of 2010 in a recent newspaper photo spread (1/2/11). See additional photograph below, perhaps the most memorable local photo of 2010. Here’s the past work of other York County photographers: J. David Allen’s work featured in: Just try to resist studying this memory-tugging Sears photograph, and Bil Bowden: Photographer tramps to far reaches of York County
and Bill Schintz: Jimmy Carter in York County: ‘He knelt down and prayed’ .
Neat stuff from all over … .

I've been editor of the York (Pa.) Daily Record/Sunday News for 8 years and managing editor of the newspaper for 15 years before that. So, York Town Square explores the rapidly changing world of journalism. And I studied York/Adams' history in graduate school, have written six books about these fascinating southcentral Pennsylvania counties and serve on the York County (Pa.) Heritage Trust board. So, this blog deals with regional history. Often, journalism and history meet here. They're part of a continuum anyway. My hope is that this site intrigues readers on both accounts in giving a daily dose of journalism/history. Or history/journalism. Contact me at
